Adelbert Lawrence Lombard*

Adelbert 'Del' 'Red' Lawrence Lombard (1911 - 2011), PELHAM, N.H. -- Adelbert 'Del' 'Red' Lawrence Lombard, formerly of Gorham, died peacefully at 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at the home of his niece Marcia and her husband Fred Godbyr, in Pelham, N.H., He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert J. Lombard and Lucina Haynes Lombard; his brothers, Clarence A. Lombard, Earnest P. Lombard, Kermit L. Lombard, Philip A. Lombard, and Theodore L. Lombard, and his sisters, Gladys A. Lombard and Edith L. Lombard. He is survived by several nephews, nieces; great-nephews and nieces; and great-great-nephews and nieces., Born on Dec. 15, 1911, in Gorham, one of eight children, Del stayed at home until 1936. For the next 40 years he traveled as a groom with the harness racing horses from Maine to Florida, to California, on to Michigan, and then back east to Roosevelt Raceway in New York with many stops in between, many times over the years. He retired from the horse racing world in the spring of 1976., Upon returning to Gorham in 1977, he went into business with his brother Theodore and started the Lombard Estates subdivision. Del built his own home in the subdivision e and lived there until August of 2010., Del had a passion for a story telling. Having lived 99 years, he had much history to share and enjoyed sharing it with friends and family - really anyone - who wanted to listen., Del loved his flowers and enjoyed showing them to everyone. He also loved to feed and watch the birds, as well as all the wildlife around his home., Del loved his sports and was always ready to enjoy a game, be it alone or with family or a good friend. He watched the Red Sox win their first world series as a young boy and followed them ever since. If it was not baseball then it was basketball or football., Del will be missed by his family and friends., A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 11 a.m., at Eastern Cemetery, Main Street, Gorham. Alan L. Gray

FAIRFAX, Vt. - Alan Lewis Gray, 64, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was born April 2, 1947, in Castine, son of the late Lewis L. and Florence (Brockway) Gray. Alan was proud to have served his country with the, retiring in 1987 after 20 dedicated years. He was a talented musician and honored those who served by playing Taps during their graveside services. Alan married the former Susan Valyou, Aug. 22, 1987, in Underhill, Vt. He was a very good cook and looked forward to returning to the beautiful lakes of Maine. Alan was deeply loved by his family and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Susan Gray of Fairfax, Vt.; two sons, Andrew Gray of Milton, Vt., and Donald Gray and fiancee, Jolene, of Burlington, Vt.; a daughter, Heather Gray and husband of Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Lillian, Willow, Nicki, Andrew, Mandi and Zach; his brother, Joseph A. Gray of Florida; sisters, Carolyn M. Gray and Mary M. Deans, both of Maine; a special childhood friend, Brent Soper; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his wonderful pet and companion, Rocksea. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Leon and Donald Gray; and sisters, Harriet Marston, Irene Bowden and Jean Jay. Visiting hours will be held 2-5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at A. W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax Chapel, where military honors will be accorded 4 p.m. for this U.S. Air Force veteran. Armand Ashenfelter*

Armand Ashenfelter, EAST WINTHROP -- Armand Ashenfelter passed away peacefully at his East Winthrop home on May 17, 2011. His loving family was by his side., Born on Sept. 19, 1916, in Wichita, Kan., he attended local schools, North High and John Brown University in Arkansas., With war clouds looming, Armand took leave as a display artist with the K.G. and E. and enlisted in the, six years prior to Pearl Harbor. He served as a Chief Petty Officer with an air squadron attached to the Atlantic Fleet for the duration of the war., A 10 day leave in 1942 afforded him the opportunity to return to Wichita and marry Rosemary Giboney who, shortly thereafter, joined him on the East Coast., Armand joined the Central Maine Power Company in October 1945 where he 'wore several hats' including display, sales promotion and was a member of the Advertising Club of Portland., Retiring 35 years later, he pursued his meaningful hobbies. He and his beloved Rosemary continued their many long- to-be-remembered travel experiences., In Armand's twilight he was heard to say, 'I have lived. I have laughed and I have cried. I have loved and been loved. I have truly been blessed with a loving family and caring friends. God has been good to me.', Armand and his devoted family suffered the loss of his adored wife for over 59 years. He now leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Jack Savona, his daughter, Debra Hart, and his son, Dirck Ashenfelter. He leaves six grandchildren, Andrea Brown and her husband Rick, Greg Savona and his wife Erika, Megan Hart and her husband Tony Sprague, Erik Hart and his wife Denise, Stephanie Ashenfelter, and Katelyn Ashenfelter; as well as five great-grandchildren, Lucas and Sydney Brown, Katherine and Avery Hart and Ryan Savona., Per Armand's request, his ashes will be committed to the sea off Bailey Island by family at a later date. AUGUSTA -- Brenda Sue Hall Caswell Greene passed away May 16, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with C.O.P.D., Brenda was born June 6, 1959, to Erlon Hall and Dorothy Hall Sherman in Gardiner. She attended Gardiner schools and obtained her General Educational Development diploma in 1977., She was predeceased by her father, Erlon Hall. She is survived by her husband, Scott Greene, of Gardiner; her son, Jeffrey Caswell (Katie); twin daughters, Brandi and Brittani Greene; and mother Dorothy Sherman. She is also survived by stepdaughter Carrie Rielly (Trevor) of Gardiner; grandchildren Kayori, Nadia, and special grandson Kale; step-grandchildren Aiden and Madoc Rielly; three brothers, Douglas Hall (Mary), Gregory Hall (Debbie) and Timothy Hall; and several nieces, nephews and cousins., Brenda worked as a CNA for many years and was loved by all. She also worked as a special ed teacher and loved all her special kids. She was an avid fisherman and loved being outdoors with her family., Brenda's family would like to thank all of the staff at Graybirch Rehabilitation for their outstanding care over the past year., They all loved her. She was born in Lynn, Mass., on March 2, 1923, the daughter of Harry Barrett and Mildred (Bradbury) Barrett., She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Irving Ballard., Surviving is a daughter, Charlee B. Curtis, and her husband, Sherman, of Gardiner; a son, Broderick Ballard, and his wife, Victoria, of Leeds; a grandson, Richard Caverly, and his wife, Beverly Donovan, of Benton; granddaughters Sara Thompson and her husband, John, and their son, Brandon, of Windsor, Anita Burdzel and her husband, Norman, and their children Christian Caverly, Andrew, Andy and Anna, all of Bar Harbor, Bridey Ballard and her fiance, Thomas Kennedy, of Westbrook, Jana Mates and her husband, Brad, and their son, Tyler, of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Jill Pichette and her husband, David, and their daughters, Emma and Alexia, all of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Trisha Raymond of Boston., There will be no public visiting hours and no public service. Cynthia N. Seavey, AUBURN -- Cynthia N. Seavey, of Denmark, died on May 12, 2011, at Hospice House in Auburn., She was born on May 10, 1932, the daughter of H. Edward Nye and Mabel E. (Roberts) Nye. She has a BA degree with a major in Classics from the Boston University College of Liberal Arts and later obtained a degree in landscape design from Radcliffe College., Cynthia was very active in her community. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Sweet Adeline's, and Concord Chorus of Concord, Mass. She was president of Minute Man Home Care in Massachusetts for four years, and a member and past president of the Council on Aging in Carlisle, Mass., Cynthia enjoyed designing landscapes for private homes, garden design and implementation, quilting, reading and writing poetry and was an active member of Unitarian Universalist churches, most recently the First Universalist Church of Norway, and enjoyed choral singing in church choirs and community choruses., Cynthia was an editor for Meriam Webster and the UUA. She later had a landscape design business called Hortus II which she shared with landscape designer Peg Megowen. She designed many landscapes for private homes in Carlisle, Mass., also for public buildings. She designed and implemented a garden for the front of the Norway UU church and also designed her own private residence in Denmark, where she and her husband had been living since 2000., Cynthia was predeceased by her father, H. Edward Nye, and mother, Mabel R. Nye. She is survived by her husband, Marden H. Seavey of Denmark; children, Clarissa Sawyer and husband Sean Denmark of Acton, Mass., Nye Sawyer of Concord, Mass., Kathryn Seavey and partner Don Reed of Denmark, Nathaniel J. M. Seavey and wife Eryn of Waltham, Mass.; and her sister, Nancy Masterton of Cape Elizabeth., There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on May 28, at the First Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St., Norway. NEWBURGH - David A. Newcomb, 86, passed away May 17, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 24, 1924, in Newburgh, son of Charles D. and Mary (Newborg) Newcomb. David attended Newburgh schools and was a graduate of Rockland High School, Class of 1942. He was also a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, Class of 1944 and served in the Merchant Marines during, . He worked as a printer for the Washington Post, Washington, D.C.; Hartford Times, Hartford, Conn.; and for the Bangor Daily News for 21 years. David was a member of Hampden Congregational Church, Hampden Historical Society and Simpson Post No. 201 of the American Legion of Dixmont. He enjoyed beekeeping, gardening and camping. David is survived by four nieces and a nephew, Jean Newcomb, Mark Newcomb, Carol Newcomb-Jones, Diane Newcomb-Moore and Gale Fomkin. Donald F. Ouellette

SOUTHBURY, Conn. - Donald F. Ouellette, 84, died May 17, 2011, after a long illness. His wife of 64 years, Joan, died earlier this month on May 2. Donald was born April 17, 1927, in Old Town, son of Francois Xavior Ouellette/Frank Willette and Alphina (Dionne) Willette. He was born and lived for 75 years in Old Town, attended Old Town schools, and lettered in football and baseball at Old Town High School. He received a degree in accounting from Husson College, Bangor. He enjoyed golf and was an avid gardener, growing potatoes and other vegetables for the whole family. During his prime, he was a great numbers man, adding and subtracting in his head faster than an adding machine. He was a 50-plus year member of Knights of Columbus. Donald was a veteran of, and served in Belgium and Germany, and a lifetime member of, . He moved to Heritage Village, Southbury, Conn., in 2002, and resided at Lutheran Home of Southbury for the last four years. Don was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph Church, now Holy Family Parish, Old Town, and more recently of St. Teresa of Avila Church, Woodbury, Conn. He was employed by Diamond International and its predecessor companies, including Penobscot Chemical Fiber Co., Old Town, as a wood scaler and accountant for the land management division and retired in 1985. Donald is survived by two daughters, Catherine Lacadie and her husband, John, of Woodbury, Conn., and Betsey Young of Bangor; three grandchildren, Christopher Lacadie, Scott Lacadie and Lindsay Young Eouse; three great-grandchildren, Katherine, Matthew and Sophia; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Raynard and Lois Ouellette of Florida and Norman and Lois Ouellette of Florida and Connecticut; and his brother-in-law, Charles W. "Bill" Rogers Jr. of New Hampshire. Donald leaves 11 nieces and nephews. The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of Lutheran Home of Southbury for their kind, caring treatment of Joan and Donald. There will be no calling hours. DEXTER - Dr. Steven F. Chapman passed away Friday, May 13, 2011. He was born Dec. 11, 1957. Steve grew up in Norridgewock and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1976. He starred on the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams all four years in high school. He went on to play collegiate baseball and football while at Case Western Reserve University. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1980 and Case Western's School of Dentistry in 1985 as a doctor of dental surgery. Steve returned to his home state to practice dentistry, initially in Dexter and eventually opening a second practice in Skowhegan. Steve was a member of Dexter Fire Department and Dexter Kiwanis. He met his wife, Debbie, in Dexter and they married in 1989. Steve and Debbie have two daughters, Jenna and Miriah. In addition to his dental practice, Steve was an entrepreneur and started numerous businesses, all of which were targeted at serving the community in which he lived or providing products to aid people with medical conditions. Steve and his family were also avid skiers and spent considerable time at Sugarloaf Mountain during the winter months where Jenna skis with Sugarloaf Mountain junior professionals and Miriah snowboards with SCVA. In addition to his immediate family, Steve is survived by his parents, William and Wilda Chapman of Mesa, Ariz.; and four brothers and their wives, Scott and Brenda of Standish, Stanley and Lisa of Hermon, Sherwood and Laurie-Anne of Gilbert, Ariz., and Sheldon of Cardiff, Calif. Steve enjoyed life and lived abundantly. He will be remembered as a great husband, dad, dentist, son, brother, friend and an active and involved member of the community. While we are all saddened that we will no longer be able to enjoy being with Steve, he would not want us to spend time mourning his passing. We will honor his wishes and instead have a celebration of Steve's life with family and friends July 3 at his residence. Evelyn Marie Ruminski Urbano, 73, DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Evelyn Marie Ruminski Urbano, 73, passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 27, 2011, in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she resided., Born in Portland on May 26, 1937, Evelyn was the last surviving child of 10 of the late Alice Gray and John Ruminski. She was a graduate of Portland High in 1955., While raising four children, Evelyn worked for George's Deli in the 70s for many years. Later on she went to Pierre's School of Cosmetology for hairdressing. Shortly after Pierre's, John and Evelyn opened up Evelyn's Tavern in South Portland in 1986, working there until she retired; moving to Florida to enjoy the rest of her life. Evelyn's is now being run by her two daughters., Evelyn was an avid card player, waiting for her next victim in a game of cribbage and other card games. She also enjoyed the night out on a bowling team hanging with some great friends, weekends on the ocean, and going to Cow and Peaks Island., After moving to Gray, Evelyn would have summer get-togethers with family and friends., She was predeceased by her ex-husband, John Urbano. She is survived by four children, John J. Urbano of Portland, Cynthia Billingslea and husband Cliff O'Brien, Deanna Terrano and life partner Donald York, and Beth Urbano, all from Gray; nine grandchildren, Mirrissa Urbano, Marina Urbano, Danielle (Ross) Toulouse, Michael J. NEW PORTLAND -- Florence Hall, 83, of Bog Road, passed away early Saturday evening, May 14, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. She previously had been a resident of Edgewood Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Farmington for the past year, where she enjoyed participating in many activities., Florence retired from HG Winter and Sons mill and was a long-time member and greeter at the United Methodist Church in Kingfield. Florence enjoyed going with her Kingfield senior friends to the country music jam sessions at the Salem Community Building and especially liked going for pizza and seeing her grandsons, Kenny and John. She and her late husband, Emery, enjoyed their gardens and bee keeping together. They also ran a teen center for several years at what is now Ayotte's General Store in Carrabassett Valley., She is survived by her son, John Hall and wife Margaret of Bath; her daughters, Joyce Werblin of Salem and Mikaela Alexander of Waterville; sisters-in-law Laura Dunham and husband Howard of Kingfield, Marilyn Clark of New Hampshire, Nola Wilson of Old Town and Barbara Wilson of Massachusetts; son-in-law Pete Louiselle of New Portland; brother Robert Wilson of Ellsworth; sisters Bea Campbell and husband Arthur of Spring Hill, Fla., Mildred Garland of Guilford, and Ruth Brooke of Clinton., Florence was predeceased by her husband, Emery; a daughter, Judy Louiselle; sisters Lillian LaBrie, Eveleyn Casey and Eva Priest; brothers Walter Wilson, Fred Wilson, Charlie Wilson and Elmer Wilson; also a half-brother and sister, Aubrey Wilson and Marguerite Miller., A celebration of her life will be held at a later date at Kingfield United Methodist Church. HOULTON - Francis John O'Donnell, 84, died May 17, 2011, in Houlton. He was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Johnsville, New Brunswick, one of 12 children to John and Lucy (Dugan) O'Donnell. Francis was a veteran of, and the, . He served in the National Guard Battery B152 for 34 years, retiring as command sergeant major in 1983. He worked for AE Stanley Manufacturing for 34 years and enjoyed gardening, playing cards, visiting the "farm" and spending time with his family. He was a devoted Red Sox and Celtics fan. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (McClay) O'Donnell; seven children, Mary and Ritchie Guilford, Marguerite and Timothy Cowan, Timothy and Sharon O'Donnell, Michael and Marcia O'Donnell, Jean and Martin Goldsmith, Douglas and Tammy O'Donnell, and Jane and Mark Hutchinson; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; siblings, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Helen Warner, Allen O'Donnell, Stella Gordon, Clifford O'Donnell, Margaret Halleck and Gerald O'Donnell; and two sisters-in-law, Marcia O'Donnell and Eileen O'Donnell. Frank C. Hanson, 89, NORTH BERWICK -- Frank C. Hanson, 89, passed away on May 12, 2011, at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford, from complications due to a long battle with Dementia., Frank was born in Cottonwood, Minn., on Aug. 8, 1921, to the parents of Effie and Marion (Throop) Hanson., Frank was preceded by his parents; and leaves Vincent T. D'Errico, his partner of 51 years; a brother, Donald and his late wife Jo of Waterloo, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; cousins, Helen Thomas and Ruth Calder of Richmond, Va.; and a step daughter, Cherry Rhodes and husband Ladd Thomas of Pasadena, Calif., Frank attended the McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, Minn., with the hopes of being a concert pianist. While there he would spend time watching the piano tuner and thought if I could tune it would help pay my way through school. He practiced with all his spare time and started tuning at the school and local customers., Frank joined the Navy on Aug. 2, 1943, so he could see the world, but joked, he ended up Stationed in Boston, Mass. He never got more then three miles off Boston Harbor to work on Naval ships. He received the WWII Victory Medal, American Area, and after discharge made his home in Boston., Frank was also an accomplished organist and played the organ at the Clifton Lutheran Church in Marblehead, Mass., for many years. He started to tune for the Steinway dealer in Boston (M. Steiner & Sons) and became head of the piano rebuilding shop and tuner, for many years., After spending several summers in Maine, they move to North Berwick in August 1969 and commuted to Boston for many years., He and his partner worked at the New England Conservatory of music for many years. They started a Piano Technology course there and then at the Steinway dealer (M. Steinert's & Sons), and over the years have, Frank C. Hanson, produced many first class Piano Technicians working throughout the U.S. and around the world., He was the concert piano tuner for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Summer Music Festival for many years. He and his partner worked for many schools, colleges and Universities throughout New England. He had many true and loyal customers, many for 25 to 30 years., His love and high regard for the Steinway piano made him one of the countries finest piano technicians. He was highly respected by the Steinway family and concert pianist from around the world, this also was the same for pop artist and the likes of Judy Garland, Lisa Minnelli, Ella Fitzgerald, Victory Barge, Beverly Sills and many others. He also was in attendance for many recording sessions, with the last being Rudolf Serkin, at his last recording at his studio in Vermont., Frank took a sightseeing plane ride from an airport in Rochester, N.H. He love it so much that he started flying lessons at the Sanford Airport, and after four weeks, he bought an Piper Warrior airplane. He was able to get his Private license, Instrument and Twin engine rating with ease and said if he had started younger he would have been a commercial pilot. He would fly to the airport near Tanglewood and rent a wreck and do his work and fly home. He also traveled with Keith Jarred across the country and Canada and would fly to concerts, to places in Eastern Canada and Upstate N.Y. He loved to fly family, friends and students over to the Maine coast and would fly some to Portland airport for breakfast or lunch., At Franks request, there will be no service and burial will be private in Maine, as he loved it so much., For those desiring to donate in his name, can donate to a local music program or the Alzheimer's, Organization in his name.


 


 

Frank Harold Farren Jr.

CHERRYFIELD - Frank Harold Farren Jr., 75, beloved husband of Paula (Fickett) Farren, and son of the late Frank Harold and Marie (Davis) Farren Leighton, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. Frank attended local schools and graduated from Cherryfield Academy, Class of 1953, where he lettered in basketball and baseball. He took courses through the University of Maine at Augusta. He married Paula Fickett June 16, 1955. He served in the U.S., from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Hood, Texas, and in Germany. Frank worked in the woods, drove truck, sold cars and was a bookkeeper for H.G. Tucker & Son. He worked for the Department of Conservation in Augusta from 1970 to 1986 and began the snowmobiling program for the state of Maine. He was elected to the Maine State House of Representatives in 1986 and served until 1994. In his time at home he worked for Jasper Wyman & Son supervising the migratory housing in Deblois. He retired in 1998. In 1997 he was inducted into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Minnesota. He was a "workaholic" and enjoyed the out-of-doors, snowmobiling, fishing and golf. In the 1960s he was a basketball referee and played "town team" baseball and basketball. He especially loved hunting camp with Gary and Gerald Willey and the time spent with dear friends, Robert and Margaret Yeager, the whole Leighton family, as well as the Ames and Davis families. He was a lifetime member of Maine Snowmobile Association, Narraguagus Snowmobile Club, Pleasant River Fish & Game Club, Franklin Veterans Club, a trustee of Cherryfield Academy and member of First Baptist Church, Cherryfield. Frank was predeceased by his father, Frank Farren Sr. and stepmother, Vira; his mother, Marie Leighton and stepfather, Reginald Leighton; brother, Richard Leighton; and sister, Jeanne Fulton. In addition to his wife, Paula Farren of Cherryfield, he is survived by a brother, Arthur Leighton and wife, Helen, of Amherst; a sister, June Grant and husband, Donald, of Orono; two aunts, Edith Davis and Adelade Davis of Cherryfield; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family extends a special thanks to the Leroy and Connie Leighton family and Janice and Burleigh Ames for their invaluable assistance this past winter and to Pastor Max and Debbie Merrill. George Herbert, Bragdon, VIRGINIA -- George Bragdon, beloved husband and father, born on Sept. 17, 1926, died on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2011., George was born in Berwick, and attended Berwick High School. In 1943, George enlisted in the, as a seaman, and served in the North Atlantic and the Pacific on the USS Cowpens during, . He received his BA in History and Government from the University of Maine in 1950, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity., George and his wife Patricia Jane Murphy Bragdon were married on Feb. 3, 1951. George joined Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in 1951, and joined Marsh and McLennan in Boston, Mass., in 1961. George remained with Marsh for the rest of his career, serving as Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Region until 1978, when he was named CEO of Marsh and McLennan of Virginia, then Managing Director of the Company until his retirement in 1991., George served as a coach of his sons' little league baseball and basketball teams, and was a member of the Weymouth, . He was an avid golfer and bridge player, and was an American Daffodil Society accredited judge., George and his wife Patty traveled across the United States and in London and Northern Ireland as daffodil judges. He and his wife were founders of the Virginia Daffodil Society in 1991. He served as president of the Richmond Daffodil Society for three terms. George and Patty were also co-chairmen of the first American Daffodil Society show held in Richmond, Va. He served as both regional director and vice-president of the mid-Atlantic region of the American Daffodil Society. George was also on the board of the Richmond Symphony and the Ronald McDonald House., In retirement, George and Patty traveled the world, owned a second home in Naples, Fla., and spent time visiting children and grandchildren. He was a member of the 'Bogey's' and the '55's' golf groups. He was a member of Saint Bridget Church, the Country Club of Virginia, and the Raleigh Tavern Society of Colonial Williamsburg. George was also a member of the Rosarian Society at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens., The Bragdons moved to Lakewood Manor in 2007, and the family would like to thank the staff of the Healthcare Facility at Lakewood for their loving care of George in his later years., He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jane Murphy Bragdon; his children, Kathleen J. She was born in Pittston on Aug. 23, 1918, the daughter of Flosie Ethel Moody and Lester L. Felt., She attended Whitefield schools and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1936. She also graduated from Kennebec School of Commerce and Gates Business School., She married Louis E. Bryant of Gardiner in 1940, and while he was in the Navy during World War 11, she worked for the federal government at Camp Langdon, Newcastle, N.H., Louis passed away in 1993. They had one son, David S. Bryant., Glenice retired from state service in 1975, after working 35 years for federal and state government., She was a life member of the Marion Chapter Order of Eastern Star 63, Maine State Employees Association and AARP., Glenice enjoyed being on the beaches, and lobsters., Survivors include her son, David S. Bryant, and his wife, Nancy, and her brother, Lawrence L. Felt, all of Whitefield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins., At Glenice's request, there will be no visiting hours., A funeral service will be held Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Greta Keith Smith, 86, FREEPORT -- Greta Keith Smith, 86, a longtime Yarmouth resident, died on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Hawthorne House in Freeport., She was born on April 11, 1924, in South Portland, the daughter of Thelma (Low) and Anson F. Keith. When she was two, the family moved to a 100-acre farm in Pownal, where she and her three sisters and five brothers grew up. She attended Pownal schools and North Yarmouth Academy., She married Carlton Snow of Pownal on Nov. 9, 1941. During World War II, she and her sister Clara Snow worked at Bath Iron Works for a time. Later she and her sister Thelma Day worked in Portland at American Can Company, where Greta drove a forklift. In the late 1940s, she worked at Freeport Shoe Factory with her sister Gladys Libby., In 1951, she married Rolan Staples of Bath. The couple moved to Old Orchard Beach, where they bought Fern Park Market and Snug Harbor Cabins. She loved the business, which they operated together for more than 17 years. She was known for her warmth, her charisma and her Italian sandwiches. Two of her nieces remember driving from Freeport to OOB just for one of 'Aunt Greta's Italian sandwiches' -- and a visit with her., She taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church in Old Orchard Beach and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Annette Chapter #184 in Saco. Her daughter Maureen Lee remembers her parents providing meals for the March of Dime walkers in OOB and sponsoring a Little League team for many years., After Mr. Staples died in 1969, Greta moved to Arundel. In 1981 she moved to Yarmouth and married Carl Smith, who had been her classmate years earlier at North Yarmouth Academy. The couple lived on West Main Street in Yarmouth. Mr. Smith died in 2001., Maureen said her mother was an ardent outdoors person all her life. She loved to snowshoe and ice skate and was 'great at crack the whip' in skating. She was an avid deer hunter and shot her first 8-point buck in 1970., In 2007, she moved to Hawthorne House in Freeport, where she lived just down the hall from her sister Gladys Libby for several years., She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Gladys, and her brothers, Leon, Floyd, Verne and Donald Keith. Survivors include her daughter Maureen Lee of Port St. Lucie, Fla., a son Wayne Snow of Sullivan; a granddaughter Mandy Snow of Oregon, a grandson Rolan Staples of Old Town; two sisters, Clara Snow of Pownal and Thelma Day of Yarmouth, a brother, Scott Keith and his wife Margaret of Freeport; and many nieces, nephews and friends., Greta Keith Smith

Harold Pomelow, 86, WESTBROOK -- Harold Pomelow, 86, of Falmouth Street, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth., He was born in Westbrook on July 11, 1924, the oldest son of Peter and Marion Collins Pomelow. Harold worked for Dana Warp Mills until 1943, entering the military in March. During WW II, he served in the 295th Engineer Combat Battalion, landing on Omaha Beach. He served from March 1943 to December 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the European African Middle East Theater Campaign Ribbon. When he returned home in 1945, he returned to work for Dana Warp Mill until he went to work for S.D. Warren., On March 6, 1948, he married Delores Bannister in Westbrook. Harold retired from S.D. Warren in 1986., Harold enjoyed fishing and hunting, spending many hours at Sebago Lake fishing for trout or salmon and hunting in the Pickett Mountain area. He also enjoyed bowling. Pool, and horseshoes. One of his greatest pleasures was walking the boardwalk along the Presumpscot River. He regularly kept track of the beavers that lived along the riverbanks. He walked the Presumpscot daily for years, until about a year ago, when he was no longer able to continue., He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Delores on Oct. 29, 2001; and brothers, Floyd, Phillip and Clyde Pomelow. Herbert 'Spike', Stinson, 70, SOUTH PORTLAND -- Herbert 'Spike' Stinson, 70, passed away on Tuesday May 17, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer., Spike was born on Oct. 15, 1940, in Bangor. He was raised by Archibauld and Ellenor Mishio in Portland, where he attended local schools. In 1957 he enlisted in the National Guard and served his time in Fort Dix, N.J., and Portland. After his time in the service he worked at Uncle Andy's bakery where he met the love of his life, Mildred Richards., In 1977 he opened Stinson's bakery, which enabled him to spend quality time with his family by attending all his children's sporting events and hosting family cookouts. He held a special place in his heart for Lori & Michael. Spike's greatest joy in life was being a husband and a father, living by the motto 'another day in paradise.', He was active in the community sponsoring many youth baseball teams in Little League Seven., A perfect day for Spike would be doing projects with Bob, supporting his son Steve and the South Portland Red Riots football team, or attending one of Joe's rock shows., After retiring, Spike enjoyed taking care of his grandson Nicholas, weekend yard sales, lounging in the sun, and romantic picnics at Spring Point with his wife., Spike is survived by his loving bride of 44 years, Millie; three sons and their spouses, Bob and Melanie, Joe and Julie, Steve and Susan; and grandchildren, Chad, Mack, Joshua, Ashley and Nicholas. John Frederick, Lunt Sr., 78, YARMOUTH -- John Frederick Lunt Sr., 78, of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2011, under the loving care of Gosnell Memorial Hospice with his family at his side., He was born on March 6, 1933, in Weymouth, Mass., to Frederick E. and Isabella J. Lunt, and was the beloved stepson of Evelyn Russell Lunt. John grew up in Danville, and is a graduate of Edward Little High School and the University of New Hampshire., As an entrepreneur, he was involved over his life time in several different business areas. He began his professional career with IBM as an account manager. In 1963, he founded Intervale Industries/Carroll Industries, Inc., a kitchen cabinet and Formica business. He sold that business in 1976 and subsequently became the Executive Director and Administrator of the Volvo International Tennis Tournament as well as Executive Director of the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce in North Conway, N.H., From 1980-1982 he was an investment broker and tax shelter co-coordinator for Mosley, Hallagarten Estabrook and Weeden in Barre, Vt., In 1982, Mr. Lunt, along with his partner John Orestis, founded North Country Associates and served as Chief Financial Officer and Managing General Partner until his retirement. North Country is recognized as a quality provider of health care services in the Northeast owning and/or managing 30 facilities in New England., John loved being a part of his children's lives, and became heavily involved with volunteering or helping facilitate their skiing activities. His home was always open to young people who needed a father figure or just closer family ties., He loved the water, and his Whaler sailboat and wooden mahogany boat became vehicles for close family times and bringing friends together., John loved people and facilitating togetherness often hosting gatherings either at his home or on his toys., He designed and built beautiful furniture and loved restoring antique cars., John is survived by his wife 'Jeanne' of 10 years; son Brian of Pittsburgh, Pa., son Rick and his wife Darci of Charlotte, Vt., daughter Martha McCarthy and husband Dan of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and daughter Julie Ann Connary and her husband Col. Nancy Johnson Hatch, KENNEBUNKPORT -- Nancy Johnson Hatch, of Kennebunkport and Conway, N.H., died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 7, 2011, while vacationing in Florida., Nancy was born on Feb. 21, 1924, in Boston, Mass., to Lars and Edith Johnson and grew up in Sormerville, Mass. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1944. At UNH she met George W. Hatch of Dover, N.H., and they married on Nov. 3, 1945. They first lived in Sturbridge, Mass., where Nancy taught school., In 1949 they moved to Kennebunkport, where she and George raised four children. Nancy was a long time member of the Arundel Yacht Club, the Kennebunkport Historical Society, and the South Congregational Church, where she also taught Sunday school. The family moved to Wethersfield, Conn., in 1962, and continued to summer in Kennebunkport. Prior to their retirement, Nancy and George ran a hardware store in North Conway, N.H. During her retirement, Nancy spent winters in Conway and summers in Kennebunkport., Nancy enjoyed reading, knitting, embroidery, puzzles, Jeopardy, traveling, and spending time visiting her children and grandchildren. She always kept closely in touch with the many friends she and George came to know over the years., She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years in 1999; and two sisters, Ruth Johnson and Elna Smith. She is survived by a son, Peter Hatch of Kennebunk, three daughters, Betsey Church of Nelson, N.H., Paula Hatch of Kennebunkport, and Sandy Hatch, who provided loving care in the last years of Nancy's life, of Conway, N.H.; a niece, Susan Smith, and a nephew, Fred Smith. Ruth E. Provencher, 96, SCARBOROUGH -- Ruth E. Provencher, 96, of Portland, died on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. The daughter Simeon F. and Catherine E. (O'Dowd) Provencher, Ruth was born in Pittsfield on June 7, 1914. She attended Maine Central Institute, and following the family move to Portland, she graduated from Deering High School in 1932., Following graduation she attended the Maine School of Commerce. Ruth then went to work for the next 23 years as a comptometer for the Boston & Maine Railroad., In 1960 she moved to New York to live with her sister, Carmelita. While in New York she worked for a large law firm as a legal secretary and attended, and Hunter College at night., In 1981, she retired and returned to Maine with her two sisters. They settled in Cape Elizabeth. Ruth's three passions in her life were skiing, traveling and painting. She belonged to the German Ski Club while in New York and the Penguin Ski Club of Maine. During her earlier years Ruth and her sister traveled all over the world., Ruth was predeceased by her three brothers, Louis, Simeon and Walter, and her three sisters, Catherine, Florence and Carmelita. She is survived by her nieces, Catherine Andreasen of Cumberland, Karen Bouffard of California, nephews, Steven and John Sonia of Massachusetts, and William Sonia of Texas; eight great-nephews, three great-nieces; and many great-great-nieces and nephews. Ruth was the oldest member of a five generations family., Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 7-9 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. SEARSPORT and BELFAST - Shirley Moulton, 71, passed away peacefully May 18, 2011. Shirley was born Feb. 21, 1940, in Belfast, daughter of Doris (Moulton) Phillips. Shirley is survived by her three children, Ardette Spear and husband, David, Carol Kelley and husband, John, and Troy Grass and wife, Stephanie; five grandchildren, Jennifer Fogg and husband, Howard, Nick Grass, Michael Kelley, Korren Grass, and Matthew Kelley; and four sisters, Ruth Kelley and husband, Jim, Fayleen Brown, Diane Robbins and husband, Jerry, and Janice Brown. Shirley will be missed by her close friends, Anita Grass, Joanne Zabrocki and Linda Demers with whom she enjoyed many shopping and lunch dates. HOULTON - Verna M. Grant, 100, died May 15, 2011, at a local health care facility. She was born Jan. 7, 1911, in Drummond, New Brunswick, daughter of Henry Wesley and Inez (Emerson) Skidmore. Verna was a member of Full Gospel Assembly Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Verna is survived by her son, Bernard Grant and his wife, Louise, of Houlton; three daughters, Bessie Guerette of Palmer, Mass., Marilyn Linder of Woodstock, New Brunswick, and Annette Copley of Houlton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William Grant Sr.; her sons, Wesley and Billy; her daughter, Patricia Noli; and her granddaughter, Norma Grant. Vincent Allan Dahlgren

BANGOR - Vincent A. Dahlgren, 94, husband of the late Avis (Edstrand) Dahlgren, passed away peacefully May 17, 2011, at a local health care facility. He was born March 3, 1917, in Perham, son of Percy and Etta (Nielander) Dahlgren. Vincent grew up in Aroostook County where he met and married his beloved wife, Avis, Dec. 14, 1940. On March 15, 1947, they celebrated the birth of twins, Dana and Donetta. Known as a hard worker, Vince was a pipe fitter for U.A. Local 321. He was a master Mason - Washburn Lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Anah Shrine. He had various interests, spending time as a licensed pilot, craftsman, beekeeper and gardener. He was also very proud of his Swedish heritage and will be remembered for his smile. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents; brother, Vernon Dahlgren; and sister-in-law, Dorothy "Susie" Dahlgren, all of Caribou. Vincent is survived by his son, Dana Dahlgren and his wife, Joyce (Sadler) Dahlgren, of Glenburn; his daughter, Donetta "Dee" Leighton and her husband, Cary, of Glenburn; three grandchildren, Carrie Lynn (Dahlgren) Chilson and her husband, Scott, of Clermont, Fla., Kyle Leighton of Portland, and Ashley Leighton of Carrboro, N.C.; and three great-grandsons, Luke Chilson, Zander Chilson and Connor Chilson, all of Clermont, Fla. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Caribou. Virginia B. Beal

ORONO - Virginia B. Beal, 86, dear wife of Gordon Beal, her husband of 65 years, died unexpectedly May 16, 2011, at her home. She was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Castle Hill, the daughter of Ralph and Mildred (Belyea) Griffin. Virginia was a graduate of Mapleton High School, Class of 1941, and Washington State Normal School, Machias, in 1944, and attended Bliss Business College, 1944-1945. She was a member of United Baptist Church, Old Town, where she taught Sunday school, Pioneer Girls, Vacation Bible School and Women's Bible Study groups. Virginia enjoyed quilting and especially fishing and boating with her husband, Gordon, and the family throughout the years, as well as family reunions, alumni banquets in Mapleton, get-togethers and activities with family and friends at the family camp on Beech Hill Pond. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Bonneva Stevens of Charleston, Esther and her husband, Albert Martin, of Red Oak, Texas, and Nina and her husband, Donald Fuller, of Old Town; her sister, Maxine Hotham of Presque Isle; her brother, Ralph Griffin of Orrington; six grandchildren, Jennifer Hudson, Melinda Nunez, Stephanie Fuller, Brad Martin, Johanna Graves and Sharon Aigler; five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at United Baptist Church, 86 Middle St., Old Town, with the Rev. Bruce Stevens and the Rev. Scott Benner officiating. Wayne R. Clark, 77, KENNEBUNKPORT -- Wayne R. Clark, 77, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at his home in Kennebunkport in the care of his devoted family., He was born in Molunkus on July 9, 1933, to the late Wilbert and Margaret (Lakeman) Clark. He graduated from Wells High School in 1952, where he played baseball, basketball and track and field. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955., He enjoyed archery, hunting, and gardening. He was also a big sports fan and loved spoiling his many loyal canine companions., Wayne was employed by Space Design Systems in Kennebunk until 1979. He also worked for many years at the Shawmut Inn and most recently at Patten's Farm in Kennebunkport, where you might find him in the garden, mowing, or telling tales., A clever and creative man, Wayne was known for engaging others with his quick wit, sparkling eyes and easy grin., He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne Young Clark; two daughters, Deborah Davis and her fiance Bill Lefebvre of Alfred, and Jodi Cone and her husband Randy of Roanoke, Va.; two brothers, the Rev. Frederick Clark of North Berwick, the Rev. Peter McCarn of East Hampstead, N.H., a sister, Bunny Tower of Ogunquit; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as a huge number of friends. He was predeceased by his son, Gregory Clark., Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 2 p.m., preceded by an hour of visitation at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Private interment will immediately follow the service at Arundel Cemetery in Kennebunkport.
