Alberta C. Blanchard

BANGOR - Alberta C. Blanchard, 68, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, in Bangor. She was born April 28, 1943, daughter of Albert Blanchard and Charlene (Curtis) Desjardins, and stepdaughter of Cyrll Desjardins. Alberta spent many joy filled hours listening to music, watching movies, playing bingo and spending time with her dear friends, Rena Murray, her family and Bonnie Brooks. She is survived by three brothers, Stan Desjardins, Val Desjardins and wife, Joanne, and Theodore Clewley and wife, Phyllis; three sisters, Debbie Desjardins, Dolores Bickford and husband, Larry, and Dena Jewell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, May 16, at Village Cemetery, Mount Ephraim Road, Searsport. Alvah S. 'Al' Irish, 61, NORTH YARMOUTH -- Alvah S. 'Al' Irish, 61, of Pinehurst Road, died on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer., He was born in Portland, the son of Millard and Mary Jane Armstrong Irish. He attended Gorham schools graduating from Gorham High School, class of 1967, and also was a graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering from Southern Maine Community College, South Portland., Mr. Irish was employed for 35 years for the former S.D. Warren Paper Company now Sappi Paper until his illness., He had a great love for landscaping and he enjoyed the serenity of the outdoors. His family stated 'Al was well versed when it came to recognizing many variety of plants, scrubs, flowers and trees. It was truly a gift he developed over the years.', He also had a great interest in working on automobiles, especially Corvettes; they were his favorite. He was a devoted husband and father spending time with his family., Besides his wife of 34 years, Nancy (Rolerson) Irish of North Yarmouth; he leaves his mother of Westbrook; two sons, Ryan and his wife Chelsea Irish of Casco, who are expecting their first child in October, Shaun and his wife Christina Irish of Bluffton, S.C.; two sisters, Jill and her husband Kenneth Pease of Westbrook, Jane and her husband Keith Meggison of Gorham; and one grandchild., A celebration of Al's life will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 7 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, with the Rev. Barbara Ann Greenier

CARIBOU - Barbara Ann Greenier, 79, died May 13, 2011, in Bangor. She was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Limestone, daughter of the late Louis and Helen (Doucette) Bourgoine. Mrs. Greenier was a graduate of Limestone High School and was employed by Potato Service, Presque Isle, for many years. She married Vernal Greenier Nov. 21, 1950. Barbara enjoyed many things in life but her family was the most important thing to her. She loved to cook large meals for her family and always had plenty for any unexpected guests. She loved to bake and will always be remembered for her whoopie pies and date squares. In her summer retirement years, many people could expect to see Barbara swinging on her front porch swing, reading a book, doing a puzzle book, or just watching the traffic go by with her husband. Surviving, in addition to her husband of more than 60 years, Vernal of Caribou, are four sons, Timothy Greenier and his wife, Lynn, Peter Greenier and his wife, Dye, Scott Greenier and special friend, Sue Frost, and Danny Greenier and special friend, Susan Pelletier, all of Caribou; three daughters, Sheila Belanger and her husband, Gregory, of Caribou, Judy Wardwell and her fianc‚, Scott Berube, of Winsted, Conn., and Cathy Preston of Endicott, N.Y.; one brother, Louis Bourgoine of Caribou; one sister, Lorraine Bouchard of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Garrett Belanger and wife, Heidi, Christopher Belanger and fianc‚e, Wendy, Keith Gagnon and fianc‚e, Leanda, Jessica Hartley, Dylan and Danielle Greenier, Sarae and Halle Greenier, and Linsey and Jakeb Pelletier; and six great-grandchildren, Hayley Goudreau, Taylor, Brandon, Skylar and Peighton Belanger, and Devin Wright. Mrs. Greenier was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and Gregory; two sisters, Blanche Evans and Cynthia Page; and a son-in-law, Roger Preston. Friends may visit with the family 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, from the chapel of Mockler Funeral Home with Father Jean Paul Labrie officiating. Carlton Willey Runnels*

FAIRFIELD - On Saturday, May 14, 2011, Carlton Willey Runnels, 90, began his journey to heaven to be with the Lord and his loved ones., He was born in Clinton on July 14, 1920, the son of Ralph W. Runnels and Fanny Bell Willey. Most of his childhood was spent in Clinton, graduating from Clinton High School, class of 1940., Carlton then proceeded to work in his father's woodenware factory. He entered the, Army, Air Corps in 1942 and was proud to do so., He met and married Inza Lewis in 1944, and the couple shared 55 years together until her passing in 2000. They enjoyed traveling and going out for lobster dinners quite frequently., Carlton also loved working in his woodworking shop, where he carved and created many unique and beautiful pieces, of which he was very proud of. He enjoyed the look on people's faces when he handed them the finished pieces. He was also very proud of the cupola that he built for the gazebo in Monument Park in Fairfield., Carlton donated this piece to the town out of the goodness of his heart., He was employed by Mayo Construction company in Waterville. Carlton also worked for and retired from Architectural Wood Craft in Vassalboro., He is survived by a sister, Jenny R. Smith of Dallas, Texas; three nieces, Edna Mary Flicker of Washington, D.C., and Evangeline Tartt and Sandra Webber, both of Farmington; three nephews, Woodie Smith of Hampton, Georgia, and Ralph Irwin and Rodney Irwin both of Homestead, Fla.; and two very dear friends, Bruce and Marlene Clement who looked after him for the past several years., He will be truly missed and fondly remembered., Visiting hours will be from 9 to 11 a.m. with a funeral service to begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. WINSLOW -- Carol-Ann LaBrecque, of Winslow, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 13, 2011, following her courageous battle with cancer., She was born on Feb. 26, 1959, in New York, N.Y., and adopted into the loving home of Loraine and the late Ralph C. Marden. Carol-Ann earned an associate's degree in library sciences from the University of Maine and was employed by the Winslow Public Library., She was a member of Kennebec Valley Baptist Church where she served as chair of hospitality and was a member of the Prayer/Care/Share Knitting Ministry. She enjoyed music, homemaking, new recipes and spending time with friends and family at their camp on China Lake. Her favorite Bible verse was Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee wherever thou goest.", She is survived by her loving husband, Paul, of 30 years; their son, Peter; her mother, Loraine Marden of Naples, Fla; her brother, Jeffrey Marden of South Portland; her in-laws, Frank and Sandra LaBrecque; many sisters- and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by their firstborn son, Paul Joseph "Joey," who died of cancer at the age of 4., There will be no visiting hours. Elbridge "Ebb" Lovley

CASTLE HILL - Elbridge "Ebb" Lovley, 87, "Country gentleman," died May 12, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home, Caribou. He was born April 16, 1924, in Castle Hill, the son of Claude and Hannah (Hilton) Lovley. He served in the U.S., during, . Ebb married Mattie Ann Hafford in 1947. Ebb was a country music entertainer for 40 years and recorded two albums. Ann was always there to support him through his musical career. The Ebb Lovley Band performed one-hour shows in 1956 and 1957 for WAGM television. In 1993 he was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame by the Down East Country Music Association. In 2004 he was grand marshall of the Memorial Day parade in Mapleton. He owned and operated Lovley's Service Garage for 33 years in Mapleton. He was a member of Mapleton Lions Club and was King Lion in 1967. He was also a member of Presque Isle, . He is survived by two sons and their wives, Conrad and Janice Lovley of Carrollton, Va., and Brett and Mary Lovley of Mapleton; two daughters, Serrena Lovley and her friend, Brenda Whitney, of Lamoine and Lori Bruce and her companion, Steve Schenck, of Westport, Mass.; two grandsons, Darcy Lovley and his wife, Stephanie, of Bangor and Dale Lovley and his wife, Rebecca, of Spotsylvania, Va.; and two great-grandsons, Landon and Matthew Lovley. Maye, 98, of North Street, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2011, after a short stay at 'The Cedars.', He was born on Sept. 26, 1912, in Stevensville, Mont., the son of Chester A. and Gertrude H. Maye., Elmer was a 65 year member of the First Baptist Church of Westbrook and later was a member of the Little Falls Baptist Church in Gorham., For three years Elmer was in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was later employed at Lucas Brick Yard, S.D. Warren and then retired from Oakhurst Dairy after 32 years., Elmer was predeceased by his wife, Vira E. Maye; son, Richard D. Maye; and several siblings., He enjoyed being home puttering in his workshop, busy in the yard and gardens, doing crossword puzzles and never missing a Red Sox game., He is survived by daughter-in- law, Frances M. CAMDEN - Ernest Leola Mank, 80, died May 12, 2011, at work. He was born Dec. 6, 1930, in Camden, to Leolar Mank and Aimie Parks Mank. On July 16, 1955, he married Beverly Maddock of Appleton. In July 1972, he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. In addition to his parents and wife, Beverly, he was predeceased by his siblings, Ruth Morong and Richard Mank; as well as nine half siblings. He is survived by a son, Jeffrey Mank and his wife, Hilary, of Hope; and a sister, Helen Hastings of Camden. He is survived by many other relatives including many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Rockville Street, Rockport. A reception will be held afterward.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., and ORANGE, Conn. - Gertrude "Jerry" Welch McPherson, 91, of East Hartford, Conn., loving wife of the late Llewellyn J. McPherson, entered into eternal rest May 14, 2011. She was born in Bangor, daughter of the late Bernard and Teresa (Kerrigan) Welch. Jerry had resided in East Hartford, Conn., for the past 67 years. She was a graduate of John Bapst Catholic High School, Bangor. Prior to her retirement she was employed for 25 years by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, Conn. She was a faithful communicant of St. Christopher Church and a past president of Pratt & Whiney Aircraft Retirees Club, involved in many of the club's volunteer projects. Jerry is survived by a devoted son, Stephen and his wife, Nancy, of Orange, Conn.; adored granddaughters, Lindsay Batastini and her husband, Matthew, of New York City and Piper Beth McPherson of Washington, D.C.; as well as several caring nieces and nephews of Maine. Harold was a longtime Littleton farmer. He had a great love of animals and was a member of Aroostook Riding Club, Houlton Fair Horse Pulls, Maine Draft Horse Association and Meduxnekeag Club. His life's passion was pulling horses and spending time with family. Harry Fletcher Knight Jr., 86, PORTLAND -- Harry Fletcher Knight Jr. (Fletch), 86, of Portland, died peacefully on May 14, 2011, at Maine, Home in Scarborough, with his family at his side., Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean; daughter Judy and husband Al Rank of Milwaukee, Wis., daughter Lyn McElwee and husband Michael of McCormick, S.C., daughter Janice and husband Dale Rauch of Ashland, Mass., daughter Nancy Morrison and husband Will of Salisbury, Md., and son Donald and wife Kim Thorpe of Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He also leaves eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren., Fletch was born on Sept. 5, 1924, in Cambridge, Mass., to Harry Fletcher Knight Sr. and Sybil Bailey. He attended Huntington School for Boys in Boston and, , graduating in 1946 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He enlisted in the, in 1943, serving during, and the, Fletch met Jean Garfield in 1945 at her father's church in Medford, Mass., and they married on Sept. 25, 1948. Over the years, they lived in six states and 11 different homes., Fletch's engineering career included work at Arthur D. Little, A.M. Kinney and PEDCO followed by time as a private consultant. In 1986, Fletch and Jean retired to Yarmouth., Fletch and Jean's family includes four daughters and a son. He taught them the value of hard work, education and persistence. His intellectual curiosity introduced them to all manner of interesting topics and ideas. He was very much a problem-solver and that, along with his love of popcorn and pizza, rubbed off on his children., Summers always meant visiting Bustins, a small island in Casco Bay. During their courtship Jean introduced Fletch to the unique charm and challenges of island life. He took to it like a duck to water despite rarely stepping in the ocean. Over the, Harry Fletcher, Knight Jr., years it became a tradition, which continues today, for his children, their kids and friends to migrate back to the island from distant locales every summer to be together as a family., Church and faith were a major part of Fletch's life. Fletch served in many roles in his churches over the years including leading worship and guiding others. He officiated at the weddings of his daughters Lyn and Nancy as well as at the wedding of Carol, who over the years had become like another daughter to him. Fletch's greatest gift was as a spiritual teacher and mentor., For those who know and love Fletch he will always be remembered as a strong, honorable man who dearly loved his family, church and country. SEARSPORT - Hazel H. (Palmer) Matthews, 85, passed away May 13, 2011, in Belfast. She was born March 15, 1927, the daughter of Harry and Noma (Gallant) Palmer. In her early years she worked at Stinson's Canning. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, feeding and watching birds, and her cat, Willow. Hazel was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church, Winterport, for many years, and more recently at Crossroads to Calvary, Morrill. She loved her grandchildren very much and enjoyed her family. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Harry Matthews; her son, Larry Matthews; a brother, Harry Palmer; and sisters, Noma Fratzel and Vivian Winslow. Hazel is survived by her loving children, Evelyn Roman, Geraldine Coffin and husband, Vernard, Lois Noyes, Daniel Matthews and partner, Kristi Buchanan, and Randy Matthews and partner, Tammi Merrifield, all of Searsport; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Palmer; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special cousin, Arthlene Gallant. Hope Higgins (Clark) Adams

WINTERPORT - Hope (Clark) Higgins Adams, 96, passed away peacefully May 10, 2011, in Florida. Hope was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Winterport, daughter of the late Morris G. and Ruth (Emerson) Clark. Hope was a hard working woman who owned her own convenience store in Brewer, bought several pieces of land which she sold, and worked as a caretaker for many people in the Bangor area. She loved spending time at her camp on the coast, enjoying many weekends of mowing the lawn and family dinners. In her later years she enjoyed spending winters in Florida before eventually living there year-round. Hope will be missed and remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and friend. Hope is survived by her children, Randolf Higgins Sr. and wife, Susan, of Winterport and Robert Higgins Sr. of Florida; brothers, Stephen Clark and Joshua Clark; sisters, Faith McKuster and Olive Clark; grandchildren, Terry Bryant and husband, Randy, of Newburgh, Hope Leighton and husband, Gerald, of Newport, Robert Higgins Jr. and girlfriend, Diane Wescott, of Belgrade, Jennifer Higgins and fianc‚, Jim Morgan, of Bangor, Randolf Higgins Jr. of Winterport and Kelly Thibodeau; great-grand-children, Justin Doble, Paige Doble, William Oxley III, Dustin Littlefield and Luke Leighton; a great-great-grandchild, Grace Oxley; a son-in-law, Vern Holyoke of Newport; and a daughter-in-law, Coral P. SEARSPORT - James E. Mace Sr., lifetime resident of Searsport, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011,701 at Waldo County General Hospital, after an illness of several months. He was born Oct. 18, 1934, in Bangor, to Allen and Lois (Patten) Mace. James "Jim" graduated from Searsport High School and served in the U.S. Army before returning to Searsport to raise a family. He married Priscilla (Grant) Mace in 1956. He spent 30 years employed at Champion Paper Co., Bucksport, retiring in 1996. Jim enjoyed his retirement years traveling with Peggy in the family RV throughout the United States, including one several-month journey through Canada to Alaska. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by sons, James Jr. and his wife, Nikki, and children, Jennifer Mace of Raleigh, N.C., William James, Dayna James and Dustin Palmer of Frankfort; Joseph "Joe" of Searsport and daughter, Kimber Mace, of Stockton Springs; Robert "Bob" and his wife, Teri, of Prospect; and Clifford "Kip" and his wife, Carol, of Stockton Springs and children, Joshua Mace and Brittany Mace of Northport, Kris Bowen and Kally Bowen of Stockton Springs; and great-grandchild, Brody Edward Mace, who was ushered into this world early to be introduced to his grandpa. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Sylvia Mace, Marion Fisher, Shirley Howard, and Belinda Barton and husband, James; brother-in-law, Manley Grant; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Philip Eugene Brett, 66, PORTLAND -- Philip Eugene Brett, 66, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home in Portland. Philip was born the youngest of 12 children in Portland on Dec. 30, 1944, the son of John L. and Grace (Bruns) Brett Sr. He was a graduate of Portland High School, class of 1963., Philip was a lifelong resident of Portland and in his earlier years he worked at Health Tex and Porteous. He afterward began a career as a custodian with the Portland Public Schools where he had worked for the past 23 years until his unexpected passing on Friday., Phil enjoyed bowling and softball. He also loved to travel, especially to his 'second home,' Chicago. He loved and cherished his family and friends and looked forward to spending time with them on the holidays., Besides his parents he was predeceased by his four sisters, Leona, Mildred and Pauline Brett, and Shirley Turenne, and his two brothers, Wesley and Ronald Brett. He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, Frank Strmecki. He is survived by his daughter Kelli Brett of Westbrook; his three brothers and their spouses, John and Virginia Brett Jr., Ralph and Mary Brett and Robert and Cheryl Brett, all of Portland, and his two sisters, Charlotte Strmecki of Chicago and Phyllis and her husband Robert Biggar of Stone Mountain, Ga. PRESQUE ISLE - Philip H. Hayden, 90, died Saturday, May 14, 2011, in Presque Isle, after a period of declining health. Philip was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Presque Isle, the youngest of seven children to Pearle and Alice (Bell) Hayden. He attended Presque Isle schools and made his family proud when he was the only son to graduate from high school. Philip enrolled in the U.S., in 1942 and served at Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Ord, Calif. In 1943 he married Iris Adams and together they raised three daughters. Philip was employed by ABC Baking Co., which later became Country Kitchen Bakery, in 1954 and stayed with them until his retirement in 1991. Philip loved skating, mostly on ice, but had great fun on the roller blades he received on his 75th birthday. Every night at 7 you could find him walking at the mall. He must have covered enough ground to have walked to Florida several times over, during those years. He was a hardworking, honest man who saw and enjoyed the humor in life. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was a loyal friend. He earned the love and respect of those who knew him. Philip was predeceased by his wife of 57 years in 2001; and his grandson, John Thomas Driscoll, in 2004. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Hayden of Portland, Joanne Driscoll and her husband, Gerry, of Presque Isle, and Karen Holbrook and her husband, Andrew, of Windham; and his No. 1 grandson, David Driscoll and his wife, Vonda, of Leesburg, Va. LEWISTON — Wilford "Bill" E. Barr 84, of High St. Lisbon Falls, died Tuesday May 10, 2011 at Central Maine Medical Center. He was born in Breedsville, Michigan on February 14, 1927 a son of the late Frank and Huldah (Wilber) Barr. He was educated in Indiana and graduated from LaGrange High School. Bill proudly served his country in the US Navy from March 1945 till October 1946. He then went on to graduate from Purdue University with a bachelors in Pharmaceutical in 1950. He married the love of his life Carolyn Rogers on February 1, 1948. She predeceased him in March, 2000. He owned and operated Roberts Pharmacy on Main St in Lisbon Falls from 1977 - 1992.
