Barbara E. Kimball

BREWER - Barbara E. Kimball, 86, wife of the late Wilfred Kimball, passed away May 1, 2011, after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Bangor, the only child of Charles and Madeline (Thompson) Merrill. Barbara was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1942. She was a lifelong citizen of Brewer and a member of First Congregational Church of Brewer since 1947. Barbara was also a member of Volunteer Circle of Kings Daughters and volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital for 13 years. She is survived by her son, John Kimball and wife, Priscilla, of Holden; her daughter, Janet Kimball of Brewer; daughter-in-law, Ruth Kimball of Orrington; two grandchildren, Lisa Kimball of Old Town and William Kimball of Brewer; stepgranddaughter, Angela and her husband, Tom Unger, of Seattle; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Nathan, Anthony, Silas and Hazel; sister-in-law, Jackie Kimball of Falmouth; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, James Kimball; and special cousin, Charlotte Cross. Funeral services will be held noon Thursday, May 5, at Brookings-Smith, Brewer Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Grace Bartlett and Pastor Carl Schreiber officiating. Friends may call 11 a.m. until the time of service Thursday. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer, immediately after the service. Carl Morton

OAKFIELD and ROCKY HILL, Conn. - Carl Morton, 87, died April 30, 2011, at Rocky Hill Veteran's Home, Rocky Hill, Conn. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Howesbrook, the son of Moses and Vanessa (Porter) Morton. While in Maine, he worked for Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. After moving to Connecticut, he worked in factories as a foreman. Carl served in World War II as a corporal in the Army, serving in Company A, 594 Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment in the Philippines. He is survived by a very special friend and caregiver, Mike "Angel" Colon; two brothers, the Rev. Donald Morton Sr. and his wife, Evelyn, of Mapleton and Gordon and his wife, Cherrylyn, of Oakfield; one sister, Rita Pratt and her husband, Robert, of Oakfield; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Ivan, Nelson and Robert; and one sister, Edith Edna. Doris V. Carberry

LISBON FALLS - Doris V. Carberry, 81, died Friday, April 29, 2011, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Gilead. Born Feb. 16, 1930, in Berlin, N.H., she was the daughter of Henry and Matilda Brodeur Alphonse. In 1948 Doris graduated from Berlin High School and married Clifford H. Carberry, her husband of 22 years, with whom she had five children. A devoted mother, she was an accomplished ice skater and bowler. Doris also enjoyed square dancing. As a military spouse, she traveled extensively throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada, enjoying many rich experiences, ultimately settling in the Brunswick area. In Brunswick, Doris worked at Grand City department store until moving to Lisbon Falls in 1968. Later she worked at Brunswick Naval Air Station and Holiday Inn until her retirement. Always active in retirement, she frequently traveled with her daughter, Marie, throughout the U.S. For the last several years, she and partner, William Kramer, wintered in Florida, where they developed friendships with other "snowbirds" from around the country. For the last three winters, they were joined by Marie and her fiance‚ Dick Turgeon. Doris' summers in Maine were spent gardening in the back yard, bird watching and spending time with family and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jeannine Carberry Cohen, in 1999; and a brother, Gustave Alphonse, in 2004. She is survived by son, Gary Carberry of Lisbon Falls; daughter, Barbara LaChance and partner, John Gill, of Richmond; daughter, Marie Carr and fiance‚ Richard Turgeon, of Somersworth, N.H.; daughter, Karen Carberry and partner, James W. Warhola, of Hampden; brother, Roger Alphonse and wife, Lorraine, of Berlin, N.H.; three sisters, Alice Jordan of Berlin, N.H., Jeannette Beliveau of Ellington, Conn., and Rita Jorrey of Troy, Mich.; sister-in-law, Anita Alphonse of Enfield, Conn.; four grandchildren, Chad LaChance, M.D., Brian LaChance and wife, Anne, Michelle Carr, A.P.R.N., and Tiffany Carr; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan LaChance and Eva Carr. Mom, we will miss you and hold dear your strength, guidance and unconditional love and support, which you gave all of us throughout our lives. Edith V. Jackson Verrill

SEARSPORT - Edith V. Jackson Verrill, 90, died May 1, 2011, at a Belfast hospital. She was born March 11, 1921, in Searsport, the daughter of Clifford and Winifred (Fredericks) Jackson. After graduating from Searsport High School, she worked in Boston while living with her sister, Hazel. Upon returning to Searsport, she worked many years for her brother, Clifford, and later in life as a caregiver to numerous friends and relatives. Edith enjoyed being outside taking long walks, working in her yard and feeding the birds. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Verrill, who died in 1972; her four brothers, Warren "Skipper" Jackson, Clifford Jackson, Alton Jackson and Harrison "Bunny" Jackson; her two sisters, Hazel Greenlaw and Mildred Jackson; a niece, Dorothy Zito and two nephews, Earle Jackson and Harrison Hahn. She is survived by her five nieces, Charlene Read and Hazel Pendleton of Belfast, Patty Clark of Searsport, Judy Choate of Wellsville, N.Y., and Jackie Jackson of East Hampton, Conn.; her three nephews, Eugene "Biff" Greenlaw of Stockton Springs, Edwin "Bing" Greenlaw of Thorndike and Richard Jackson of Searsport; special great-nephew, Edwin "Buddy" Greenlaw III; many great-nephews and great-nieces; special lifelong friend, Dr. Ellen Fuller; dear friends, Jennifer Rich, Chuck and Lila Sheefel and Wayne Hamilton, all of Searsport; and her wonderful friends and staff at Tall Pines, who enriched the last year of her life. Elaine attended Cony High School. She was a very kind woman who loved God, her family and her friends with every ounce of her being. She enjoyed cooking, scrapbooking and most recently started to paint. Painting brought her peace and she shared her art with many family members and friends. Elaine was loved by many people and those who knew her would say she had huge heart and passion for those who took the time to know her better., Elaine was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, James H. Fay E. Towle

DEXTER - Fay Towle, 85, died April 29, 2011, at his residence as a result of an ATV accident. He was born May 2, 1925, in Dexter, a son of the late Wallace and Eula (Levenseller) Towle. Fay worked at Fayscott Machine Shop, Dexter, and also worked for many years as a grader operator for H.E. Sargent Co. He was also a well-known strawberry farmer. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and telling stories. Fay loved to make people laugh. He is survived by two daughters, Betty and husband, Douglas Mills, of Dexter and Melanie and her partner, Annette Cormier, of Dexter; grandchildren, Cassandra and husband, Steve Curtis, of Dexter, Douglas Jr. and wife, Adrienne Mills, of St. Albans; one great-grandson, Scott Robinson of Dexter; two great-granddogs, Gino and Doby; a brother, Bernard Towle of Dover-Foxcroft; nieces, nephews and cousins. Frederick L. Wasson

BUCKSPORT - Frederick L. Wasson, known to all as Bim, died April 30, 2011, at his home. He was born May 11, 1920, the son of George H. Wasson and Daisy (Gott) Wasson. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Germany and France in the 294th Signal Corps, landing at Normandy Beach, and was recipient of the Purple Heart. Bim was an incredibly hard worker. In addition to working 30 years in the Bucksport paper mill, he worked his farm, raised beef cattle, cut meat and worked in the woods. He loved playing with tractors and was the happiest when he was with Langdon working in the woods. Bim is survived by three daughters, Diane Chandler of Bucksport, Meredith Shaw of Albuquerque, N.M., and Luann Wasson of Bucksport; sons-in-law, Langdon Chandler and George Shaw; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, George "Hornet" Wasson Jr. of Bucksport; and one sister, Doris Knight of Katy, Texas. Bim was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Florence Mildred Wasson; and two sisters, Aline (Wasson) Maccirio and Margaret (Wasson) King. Bim's kind spirit and sense of humor will be missed by all. Glenna M. Churchill

ROBBINSTON and WINTERPORT - Glenna Mae Churchill, 96, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Calais Regional Hospital. Glenna was born April 19, 1915, in Sangerville, one of eight children to Elwood and Mae (Priest) Bragdon. She graduated from Sangerville High School, Class of 1932, and Maine School of Commerce, Class of 1933. She worked as a secretary for Bangor Hyrdo until she got married to Edward Churchill in Bangor Oct. 23, 1939. They lived in the Brewer/Bangor area until moving to Winterport, where they resided for 54 years. While in Winterport, Glenna was a substitute teacher and was instrumental in starting the school lunch program. She was active in St. Gabriel's R.C. Church, Winterport, where she served as treasurer, taught Sunday school and was a member of Daughter's of Isabella. Glenna enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, quilting, crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and traveling. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her seven siblings; and a son, Edward Barry Churchill. ELBERTON, Ga., and MONSON - Jacqueline Ann Doughty Cole, 76, of 136 Forest Ave., wife of David L. Cole, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens, Ga. Born Nov. 16, 1934, in Bangor, she was the daughter of the late George L. Doughty Sr. and Marion Brown Doughty. She graduated in 1953 from Bangor High School, Bangor. She completed her nursing studies in Philadelphia. Prior to her retirement, she was unit manager of personal care at Artman Lutheran Home, Ambler, Pa., and then director of nurses at Front Royal Family Practice, Front Royal, Va. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Elberton, Ga. She served on the board of Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation, and was a member of the Iris Garden Club and Elberton Historical Preservation Commission. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, David L. Cole; sons, David L. Cole Jr. of Baltimore and John Doughty Cole of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Cole Kallis of Atlanta; brothers, George L. Doughty Jr. of Bangor, James F. Kenneth F. Morgan

BANGOR - Kenneth F. Morgan, 70, passed on April 30, 2011, at his home. He is survived by his beloved hiking and life partner of 30 years, Richard D. Strout. Summiting Mount Whitney and Long's Peak, backpacking the Grand Canyon, exploring all the trails of Baxter State Park with it's jewel Katahdin and Acadia National Park so many times, as well as so many more special places was their ultimate joy. Ken graduated from Old Town High School in 1959 after attending Herbert Gray Elementary School and Bradley Grammar School. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government. A Fulbright Scholarship enabled him to attend the University of Erlangen, Germany, and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at Northwestern University led to an Master of Arts degree in history. After teaching history for a few years in the University of Maine System while pursuing further graduate education, he spent 35 years with the Maine AFLCIO advocating economic, social and environmental justice for all. Ken was a union brother of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1837, seeing the solidarity of all brother and sister workers as the key to the good society. A lifelong liberal and humanist, he co-chaired the progressive Dirigo Alliance for many years. In addition to his partner, Rick, Ken is survived by his revered big brother, Charles and wife, Jerie, Ken's second sister. He cherished his niece, Cherie Grimm; and his nephews, Jim, David and Rick Morgan and Mark Brissette and their beautiful families. His many dear cousins remained close from childhood. He was predeceased by his perfect parents, Filmore and Lillian Morgan; his precious sister, Verna and brother-in-law, Don Brissette; and his one-of-a-kind, brother, Cy and sister-in-law, Myra Berry. Maureen McFadden Mainen

CASTINE - Maureen "Reenie" Mainen, wife of Michael Mainen, died April 26, 2011, surrounded by her family at her home. Maureen, the daughter of Frank and Mary McFadden, was born and raised in Mt. Lebanon, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. Maureen was an artist and educator. She graduated from Brown University in 1963 and earned a master's degree in clinical psychology from McGill University. She practiced school psychology in Todd County, Minnesota, before moving to Maine in 1978. She taught in Winterport and Newburgh schools before retiring in 1995. Maureen studied art at the University of Maine in the early 1980s and found her true calling as a sculptor. When she and her husband moved to Castine in 1994, she found the perfect setting to work and enjoy the natural beauty of Maine. In addition to her husband, Mike, and golden retriever, Blue, Maureen will be missed by her son, Zachary and his wife, Susana, and baby of Lisbon, Portugal; her son, Andrew and his girlfriend, Rie, of California; two sisters, Patricia and Jeanne and their families of Florida; a special niece and nephew, Jan and Tad Wood, and their family of Annapolis, Md.; many special friends near and far. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. OLD TOWN - Rachel M. Francis, 71, joined our father April 29, 2011, in heaven, after a lengthy, yet courageous battle with lung disease. She was born April 28, 1940. Rachel, a dedicated homemaker, inspired stories of how she touched the hearts and lives of those she came in contact with. She loved bingo and spending time with her family and friends. Rachel was a devoted wife of 42 years to Joseph S. Francis Sr., who predeceased her only two weeks ago. She is survived by her children, Susan, Troy, Chris and David; and grandchildren, Kaylie, Dakota, Sydney and Isabella. She is also survived by her sister, Connie Stinson of Vermont. Rachel blessed her family with love and kindness and will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. May 21 at St. John's Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor.


 


 

Raymond F. Homchuck

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Raymond F. Homchuck, 79, passed away April 29, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born March 9, 1932, in Houlton, the son of Frederick and Olga (Garber) Homchuck. Raymond graduated from Houlton High School and Ricker College, Houlton. He went on to graduate from Washington University, St. Louis, and from the University of Cincinnati. Raymond served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for AT&T for 31 years until his retirement. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary June (Muller) Homchuck of Bangor; brothers, Rudy Homchuck and wife, Betty Ann, of Dover-Foxcroft, Peter Homchuck and wife, Ada, of Monticello, Paul Homchuck Marcia of Haynesville; a sister, Jeannette Delong of Monticello; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Raymond was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Walter Delong. Ronald A. Marsh

GREENVILLE - Ronald A. Marsh, 76, died April 29, 2011, at C.A. Dean Hospital, Greenville. He was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Greenville, son of Bert and Elva (Calder) Marsh. He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. In Vietnam he served with the Green Berets and was a ranger during the Korean War. As a result of his service he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, retiring from the Army in 1987 with the rank of command sergeant major. After the service, he worked for Veterans Services, retiring in 1998. He is survived by his wife, of 50 years, Josephine (O'Leary) Marsh of Greenville; a brother and his wife, Tom and Nancy O'Brien of Virginia; sisters-in-law, Barbara Travis and Ellie O'Leary, both of Massachusetts; and a brother-in-law, Daniel O'Leary of New Hampshire; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Marsh Jr.; and a daughter, Ellen Marsh. AUGUSTA -- Tabitha A. Edmondson, 30, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 23, 2011, at her home. She was the most wonderful, loving, caring, special wife and mother that could ever be. She was the most beautiful person inside and out. Dan and Tabitha's special place was Bermuda where they vacationed several times yearly., She was Dan's soul mate and his best friend. Dan loved her with all his heart. Dan and Tabitha were inseparable and cherished every minute of every day together. Dan felt like he was the luckiest guy in the world to be married to Tabitha. There are no words to describe the love Dan had for her and the pain he feels without her. Dan will love her with all his heart forever and his heart will be permanently broken without her. She was the love of his life. Tabitha loved spending time with her husband and family. She doted and adored her son, Wyatt, and stepchildren, Bo and Taylor. Dan and Tabitha enjoyed going for walks together and taking their son to the park. They all meant the world to her. They loved her with all of their hearts. She was born in El Paso, Texas on Oct. 15, 1980, the only child of William and Leanne (Hutchings) Choate, to whom she meant the world., Mrs. Edmondson was a graduate of Hall-Dale High School, class of 1998 where she was Salutatorian of her class. She was the co-owner of Maine Professional Hearing Center and The Perfect Gift with her husband, Dan for the last eight years. Tabitha had an artistic gift and talent that she used to create beautiful and personal gift baskets that allowed her customers to express their love and appreciation for others. She had a passion to make each and every gift basket with love and care. Tabitha was very artistic and creative. She loved dance and art and especially gardening. She was also an unbelievable cook., She is survived by her husband of six years, Daniel E. Edmondson of Augusta; her son, who was everything to her, Wyatt E. Edmondson of Augusta; two stepchildren whom she loved dearly: Bo D. Edmondson and Taylor D. Edmondson of Augusta; her parents, William and Leanne (Hutchings) Choate of Farmingdale and paternal grandparents Richard and Virginia (Blake) Choate. She was predeceased by maternal grandparents Conrad and Mary (Morang) Hutchings; mother-in-law, Nancy Herlihy of Waterville, who also loved her dearly, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins., At her request, there will be no visiting hours or memorial service. Verna E. "Bonnie" Brooker

BANGOR and ORRINGTON - Verna E. "Bonnie" Brooker, 83, passed away Friday, April 29, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility. Bonnie was born May 31, 1927, in St. Francis, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Mills) Jones. Bonnie graduated from Madawaska Training School, Fort Kent, in 1946. She was employed at Sears, Roebuck & Co. - first as a sales clerk, then eventually retiring as a department manager after 29 years of service. Bonnie was devoted to her family and her husband of 39 years, Matthew H. Brooker Sr. She loved cooking for family gatherings and her specialties were baked beans and scrumptious desserts. She enjoyed reading, crafts and traveling. In retirement, she and Matt traveled to Hawaii, Europe and the Grand Canyon. She was an active member of Essex Street Baptist Church and participated in Sunshine Class and missionaries at the church. Bonnie enjoyed the outdoors and she and Matt spent many summers in their camper traveling throughout Maine to fish from East Grand Lake, Jo-Mary and Moosehead. Bonnie had a zest for life and welcomed her many friends to her home with open arms and a cheery smile. She will be missed greatly by everyone who knew her. In addition to her husband, Matt, who passed away February 2011, Bonnie was predeceased by her two infant sons from her first marriage, Randy and Scott Viles; and a brother, Harold Jones. She is survived by her beloved sister, Mary E. Gray of Orrington; sons, Brad Viles of Ellsworth, Matthew H. Brooker Jr. and wife, Diane, of Waterboro, James J. Brooker and wife, Suzanne, of Veazie and Michael P. Brooker and wife, Jennifer, of Bangor; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews. The family thanks all those at Dirigo Pines, Orono, as well as East Side Rehabilitation and Living Center, Bangor, for their loving care of our mother.
