K. Eugene Fournier

Fournier, K. Eugene, 86, of Augusta, died April 27.

K. Eugene Fournier*

AUGUSTA -- K. Eugene Fournier was born to Joseph and Harriet Peach Fournier on Dec. 26, 1924. He was 86 years old when he died April 27, 2011, of complications due to a stroke he suffered a few days prior., He was born and raised in Marblehead, Mass., but came to Maine in the 1950s to pursue a special ministerial work as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He first went to Houlton to teach people there the beautiful truths found in the Bible, but after a few years settled in Augusta area, where he spent the majority of his life. He balanced his active ministry with his work as a bookkeeper at the Senator Inn., Not only did he enjoy teaching the Bible, he also loved taking advantage of Bible instruction at international conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses. He went all over the world to such places as Japan, Australia, Hawaii, Kenya, Fiji, South America, Tonga and many more. His love for travel combined with his amiable personality made it easy for him to make friends worldwide. As K. was the very picture of hospitality, he loved playing host to his many international and local friends in the faith. He was an excellent cook and liked to experiment on his guest with creative recipes., Another lifelong passion he had was with flowers, especially roses. His home in Augusta was well known for its colorful and abundant blooms, and neighbors and passersby wouldn't just admire them; they had to let him know in person or with a note just how much they enjoyed the beauty he created in his tiny yard. One neighbor even took pictures of his garden and presented him with a collage he proudly hung on his wall., K. remained single all his life, but was part of a large, spiritual family who loved him dearly and who were of great assistance to him in his waning years. Neighbors who lived close by also showed a kindly interest in him and that was greatly appreciated by all., K. was predeceased by his only sister, Beverly, and her husband, Lauri Aho, of Massachusetts and Florida; and is survived by a nephew and his wife, Joseph and Phyliss Aho, of Florida., Much more could be said about K.'s kind, good-natured personality and his readiness to laugh and tell stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but we are comforted in knowing he rests safely in Jehovah God's memory, awaiting a resurrection to a paradise on earth. We invite you to learn more about this wonderful hope by attending his memorial service. Memorial arrangements will be May 14 at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 43 Eastern Ave., Augusta.

William H. Forbes

PRESQUE ISLE - William H. Forbes died May 3, 2011, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 27, 1931, in Bingham, son of the late William E. and Florence (Dickinson) Forbes. The family moved to Caribou where Bill graduated from Caribou High School, Class of 1949. Bill was one of the many people who saw Aroostook County as the gateway to the world. His love for science and particularly geology started before high school and remained a central theme throughout his life. The door really opened when three paleontologists, one from MIT, one from the U.S. Geological Survey, and one from the University of Connecticut, spied the young man sifting through a rock cut on the side of a County road and asked him what he was doing. "Looking for fossils," he responded. "You won't find anything there," he was told. Reaching into his pockets, he responded, "I'm pretty happy with what I've found." He invited them home for dinner and showed them his collection. One of the plant fossils was so spectacular that a new species to science was created. "Psilophyton forbesii" was published and later specimens were donated to the collections of the Smithsonian Institution. In all, more than 20 species to science were created from his life's work in paleontology and biology. His reputation among geologists in Maine continued to grow and he served as the state geologist for several years. However, he is best known as an educator, having taught geology at the University of Maine at Presque Isle to hundreds of students, passing on his love for science and learning. He cofounded the GeoEcology Club at UMPI as a means of exposing students to experiences beyond the classroom. His class field trips to Quebec and Florida became unforgettable adventures for many of the students. As a result of Bill's contributions to science, he was granted an honorary doctorate from Ricker College in 1970 and his students affectionately called him Doc thereafter. A highlight of his career was the research and teaching sabbatical at the University of Cork, Ireland, in 1983. He loved to travel and his research interests took him all over North America, Europe and even into Russia. After his retirement from UMPI, he remained in active contact with successive UMPI presidents, sharing his experience and hopes for continued development and faculty research. Most of all he loved making friends. You could not have a short conversation with him. He met his wife, Warrena, in Washburn and lived there most of his life. Active in the community, he served on the board of Washburn Memorial Library, as chairman of the Washburn town centennial committee in 1961 and Squa Pan Lake Association. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Warrena Forbes; his three children, Peter Forbes and his wife, Susan, of Presque Isle, David Forbes and his wife, Paula, of Roslindale, Mass., and Beth Forbes of South Portland; six grandchildren, Benjamin Hancock, Abigail Moulton, Samantha Hancock, Lucas Forbes, Alex Forbes and Rosalyn Forbes; his three sisters, Gloria Flannery and her husband, Ruel, of Fort Fairfield, Phyllis Anderson of Orange City, Fla., and Janet Erickson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 16 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father; and three brothers, Richard, Donald and Philip. He will be missed by his photography buddies, Paul Hamlin, Oscar Nelder and Brian Ross; his geology colleagues, Arthur Hussey, Gary Boone, Andrew Kasper, Patricia Gensel, Richard Naylor, Stuart Gelder and Robert Newman; his friends, Donald Blackstone and Donald Zillman; and many more friends too numerous to mention. A memorial service is planned for June 25 at State Road Church, Mapleton. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute to William Forbes Geology Scholarship, with checks payable to Foundation of the University at PI, University of Maine Presque Isle, 181 Main St., Presque Isle, ME 04769 or the charity of their choice. Arrangements in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Online condolences may be expressed at
