Bertrand R. Dufour

VAN BUREN - Bertrand R. Dufour, 84, died April 19, 2011, at a Caribou hospital. Having participated in the Cursillo Movement, he is living his Fifth Day. Bert was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Presque Isle, son of Victorie and Zeline (Ouellette) Dufour. He worked at Gagnon's Hardware for 36 years until his retirement. Bert was also a member of Van Buren Fire Department for 17 years, a part-time officer of Van Buren Police Department for eight, and was a member of Van Buren Drum and Bugle Corps. Bert served as a director on SAD 24 school board for eight years, was trustee of Van Buren Light and Power District for 20 years, and a member of Van Buren Housing Authority for three. As an active participant of his church, he was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1635 and Fourth Degree Assembly, a member of the Third Order of Mary and Good Shepherd Affiliates. For 13 years after his retirement, Bert enjoyed volunteering in various capacities at Borderview Nursing Home. He took great pride in his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous and the countless people he helped on their road to sobriety. Bertrand is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan (Saucier) Dufour of Van Buren; three sons, Kenneth Dufour and his wife, Diane, of Nashua, N.H., David Dufour and his wife, Leila, of Cyr Plantation, and Duane Dufour and his wife, Judith, of Portland; one daughter, Rachel Ouellette and her husband, Michael, of Long Lake; six grandchildren, Dustin Dufour and wife, Deanna, Danielle Dufour, Chad Ouellette, Sherry Ouellette and her fiance, Jamie Theriault, Shane Dufour, and Gretchen Violette and husband, Brian; and seven great-grandchildren, Jayde and Elyssa Violette, Alex and Dylan Ouellette, Skylah Gendreau, Austin West and Matthew Dufour. Bert was predeceased by a son, Chad; a brother, Fernand; and a sister, Sister Rachel Ouellette, OSU. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday and 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. Blanche Ruth, Pramis, 77, BUXTON -- Blanche Ruth Pramis, 77, of Fogg Road, passed away on April 20, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, surrounded by her family., She was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Nov. 17, 1933, the daughter of the late Harry and Dorotha (Runyon) Sawyer, and graduated from Portland High School., Although she was a 'jack of all trades' and worked for many jobs over the years, it was raising her family that was most important to her., She will always be remembered as the 'Best Nana Ever.', Besides being with family, she enjoyed Bingo, crocheting, puzzles, traveling, and was an avid Mickey Mouse fan and collector., She was predeceased by her husband, Robert P. Pramis Sr.; her significant other, Elroy Mills; daughter, Donna Pramis; and brother, James Sawyer. Blanche is survived by her sons, Richard Pramis of Portland, Robert Pramis Jr. of New Gloucester, and David Archibald of Naples, daughters, Penni Lee of Gorham, Susan Sanborn of Standish, and Risa Dennison of Buxton; sisters, Marilyn Hodgdon of Portland and Carol Hall of Windham; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren., Visitation will be on Saturday morning, April 23, from 10-11 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located on the corners of Rts. 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd.) in Buxton (Bar Mills). AUGUSTA -- A celebration of life for Burton W. Gay, who died April 9, 2011, was held Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, with the Rev. Scott Jones, pastor of All Souls Church, Oakland, officiating. As part of the service, there was a time of sharing. Also, several of Mr. Gay's favorite theme songs from past television shows were played., Pallbearers were Bruce, Shawn and Austin Figoli, Chad Caron, Aaron Hussey and T.J. Vallee., Burial occurred in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, where pastor Jones offered committal prayers. Doris Mabel Robinson

LUBEC - Doris Mabel Robinson, 84, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Orono Commons nursing facility. Born Dec. 26, 1926, in Waltham, Mass., she was the daughter of James and Martha Anderson. Doris moved to Maine with her husband of 47 years, the late Roger Towse Robinson, in 1948. Together they owned and operated the family farm in north Lubec for many years. Doris was a loving homemaker, but also worked for many years as a secretary at North Lubec Mfg. & Canning Co. Doris was an active member of the community, who attended Christian Temple Church. She was constantly doing for others, and volunteered for many years at Oceanview Nursing Home. She also did volunteer work for Lubec Memorial Library, Meals for Me, West Quoddy Head Light House Visitors' Center, and Woman's Club Senior Social. She was secretary of Christian Temple Woman's Group and Lubec Women's Club. She loved to travel and throughout the years she had visited many of the nation's 50 states. Doris touched the hearts of many and will be remembered as a hardworking, strong willed, determined individual who always was looking to help others and constantly put the needs of her family first. Doris is survived by a large family, and many close friends through whom she will be remembered and missed. Doris is survived by her five children, Oscar Robinson and his wife, Linda, of Smithfield, Va., Judy Robinson of Hermon, Peter Robinson and his wife, Christina, of Lubec, Lance Robinson and his wife, Rosie, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Larry Robinson of Cathedral City, Calif.; brother-in-law, Robert Robinson and wife, Betty, of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Pauline Robinson of Charleston; six grandchildren, James Robinson, Jason Robinson, Brad Robinson, Sara Bailey, Christopher Robinson, Nathan Robinson and Jun-Mark Robinson; 11 great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Mason, Bradley, Trace, Hannah, Sydney, Colby, McKenna, Hunter, Cooper, Jacob; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Geoffrey B. Findon*

MONSON, Mass. -- Geoffrey Brent Findon of Monson, age 64, passed away peacefully in his sleep April 20, 2011, after a courageous battle with multiple illnesses. Geoff was blessed with the opportunity to spend his last moments at home surrounded by loved ones, and left this earth without any suffering., He was born Jan. 15, 1947, in Wind Gap, Pa., eldest son of the late Amelia (Wawrzyniak) Findon and the late Brent E. Findon. Geoff was proud to have earned his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University, class of 1968, and his master of business administration from the University of Maine, and later earned certification as a senior professional in human resources. He was employed as a human resource manager by the former Scott Paper Company, with whom he spent 28 years, 19 of them in Waterville, Maine; Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Fort James Corporation. He finished his career in 2003 at American Pad and Paper in Holyoke., Geoff was involved in Boy Scouting in Maine and New York for many years as a Scoutmaster, unit commissioner, and district commissioner, and also worked very hard to earn the Wood Badge. Geoff was proud that three of his four sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout. A Registered Maine Guide, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. An acoustic guitar enthusiast, Geoff played for more than 45 years and attended several concerts by his favorite musicians Leo Kottke, Pat Donahue, Doyle Dykes and Bela Fleck. Geoff was an avid fiction reader and photographer, as well as a stalwart Red Sox, Patriots and Green Bay Packers fan. He played an active role in the Massachusetts Miata Club, dedicating his free time to the editing and distribution of the quarterly newsletter. He enjoyed spending many a sunny weekend with his Mazda Miata friends "zoom-zooming" around the lovely roads of southern New England with Wini at his side., Geoff is survived by his beloved wife and best friend since 1972, Wini C. (Manganella) Findon, of Monson; four sons, Stephen M. (Jeanine) Hanley, of Waterville, Geoffrey B. Findon Jr., of Lowell, Robert J. Findon, of Truckee, Calif., and Matthew M. Findon, of Oxford; two grandchildren, Sarah and Jacob Hanley, of Waterville; his great-grandson and great-granddaughter, Zachary and Kennedy Leavitt of Waterville; five brothers, Brent and wife Helen Findon, of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., Gregory and wife Rosanne Findon of Wind Gap, Pa., Gary and wife Annette Findon, of Nazareth, Pa., George and wife Pam Findon, of Pen Argyl, Pa., and Guy and wife Mary Findon, of Wind Gap; four sisters, Susan and husband Larry Nelson, of Lighthouse Point, Fla., Judy Mancini, of Nashville, Tenn., Cindy Schriner, of Nazareth, Pa., and Beth and husband John Hildabrant, of Easton, Pa.; and more than 20 nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Geoff., He was predeceased by his mother, father, and brothers-in-law John Schriner and George Mancini. John Albert, McArdle Jr., 82, CAPE ELIZABETH -- John A. McArdle Jr., 82, of Broad Cove Road, died peacefully on April 20, 2011, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland., John was born in Lynn, Mass., on Oct. 18, 1928, the son of John A. Sr. and Ruth York McArdle. He lived in Nahant, Mass., in his youth. He earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1950 and then his master's degree in Higher Education at Framingham State College. John also served in the United States Coast Guard from 1950-1953 stationed at Popham Beach., John married Frances H. Terrick in Washington, Conn., in 1954, and worked for Atlantic Richfield in New England. His children, John A. III and Deborah, were born in 1955 and 1957 respectively. In 1965 John and Frances moved their family to Cape Elizabeth for a better quality of life and so that John could assume a position at St. Francis College in Biddeford where he served as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and Dean of the Summer School until 1973. Subsequently John worked in the insurance field for Paul Revere/UNUM and was active in it until May 2010. He greatly enjoyed helping and advising his clients and was well respected and highly versed in that business., In his spare time he enjoyed his family, Dixieland jazz and he was accomplished as a stride pianist. He was a voracious reader and with his wife he attended his children's sporting events. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and also followed and supported local sports teams including the Portland Sea Dogs and the Portland Pirates. He and his wife Frances enjoyed spending time in the British Virgin Islands on Tortolla., John was a communicant of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Cape Elizabeth., John was predeceased by a sister, Lois Noonan. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances; a son, John A. III and his wife Meredith Fisher McArdle of Freeport, a daughter, Deborah M. MADRID TOWNSHIP -- Leatrice J. Sargent, age 83, of Madrid Township died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, surrounded by her loving brother Ray and sister-in-law Ruby Branum and close friends., She was born in Lenna, Okla., on Aug. 27, 1927, the oldest child of Arthur and Florence Branum., She married Lloyd Sargent on Jan. 27, 1951. They were married for 50 years. Lloyd died on Oct. 7, 2001., Leatrice will be most remembered as a very sweet lady. She provided numerous meals and sweets for those in need and various community functions. She was an avid gardener and sewed for the Reeds Mill Ladies Circle for many years, making quilts to support the Reeds Mill Church. She was a member of the Madrid Historical Society. She loved her cat, Toby, who is 15 years old and would jump up and lay with her. Leatrice was a wonderful neighbor and friend who was loved by many who would do anything for her., She is survived by her younger brothers, Ray and his wife, Ruby Branum, of Mount Holly, N.C., and Herb and his wife, Terry, of Morris, Okla., and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Art Branum., Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, April 25, at the Phillips Congregational Church, Main Street, Phillips, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. with Pastor Sue Kaplan-Burgess and the Rev. VASSALBORO -- Lester Kincaid Albee Jr., age 86, died peacefully at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on Sunday, April 17, 2011, after a long illness. He was born in Windsor, on April 11, 1925, a son of the late Lester K. Albee, Sr. and Carrie (Martin) Albee Pierce., He attended Cony High School and graduated in 1942. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942, serving as a "telephone man" with the 4th Division. He saw combat in the Marshall Islands, Roi Namur, Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was discharged from Quantico, Va., in 1946, with the rank of sergeant., On Dec. 1, 1945, he married Phyllis Cole of Vassalboro, and they raised four children. He worked 36 years for the former New England Telephone and Telegraph Co., starting as a lineman, training as a teletype specialist, and doing much of the telecommunications work at the State House and state office buildings in Augusta. He served as vice-president of Local 8, International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers., He later became an NET&T real estate manager for the central Maine region, traveling from Augusta and Waterville to Greenville, Belfast and everywhere in between, supervising the construction of new offices in the state. He joined the Neguemkeag (166/54) Masonic Lodge in Vassalboro in September 1951, and received his 60-year service medal in March 2011. He was also an active Shriner for many years. He was a dedicated member of his community, serving on the Pine Tree Boy Scout Leadership Council and as a troop leader for more than 20 years. He was a School Committee member for 15 years and served on the Vassalboro Cemetery and Library committees., He and Phyllis loved horses and harness racing, and they traveled to Bangor, Scarborough, New Hampshire, and to local fairs, watching the horses they bought and trained for the next 25 years. While his father-in-law, Merle Cole, was alive, Lester and his sons spent many happy hours hunting and fishing at Cole's camp in Lang Township., He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sons Laurence, Eric and Kenneth Albee; daughter Valerie Tucker; nephew Richard Leighton; half-brother Rodney Pierce; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren., The family would like to extend its gratitude to the Company B staff of the Maine Veterans Home for their compassion and professionalism., There will be no public visiting hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Mrs. Tarr was a member of Dunntown Advent Christian Church, Wade, and was employed by the Birds Eye Division of General Foods, Caribou, for more than 25 years. Mable is survived by her nephew and wife, Dwight and Elizabeth Stickles of Caribou, who were her caregivers for more than 15 years, and she will also be greatly missed by their dog, Koko I, whom she dearly loved. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of services Saturday, April 23, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with Pastor Mary Lou Brown officiating. Mable had a great love for animals and while living in Perham, there were always dogs, cats, hens, ducks and other animals around her home and yard, with most having names and being treated as pets. She was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Orland, daughter of Herbert and Alice (Heath) Bowden. Margaret enjoyed canning, embroidering, playing games and camping, especially the trips to Baxter State Park with her grandchildren. She was a member of Castine Grange No. 250, Castine. She is survived by one son, Robert Gott and his wife, Ruth Anne, of Penobscot; two daughters, Lillian Leach and her husband, Brently, of Penobscot, and Elizabeth Moore and her husband, Earl, of Northeast Harbor; 10 grandchildren, Nicky, Kelly, Wade, Earl, Wendy, Rebecca, Mary-Alice, James, Eric and Melanie; 18 great-grandchildren, Tyler M., Margaret, Read, Kasey, Rochelle, Spencer, Abby, Lindsey, McKenzie, Cole, Ashley, Brittany, Sydney, Austin, Connor, Keegan, Jordan and Tyler L.; one great-great-grandchild, Gabriel; sister, Maxine Marks and her husband, Milford; one niece, one nephew and many friends. Marion was active in Alton Methodist Church, and helped cook and prepare their public suppers for many years. Family was always her first priority and very important to her. Marion especially enjoyed gardening and her plants. Norman L. "Tooter" Tuttle

PRESQUE ISLE - Norman "Tooter" L. Tuttle, 45, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, after a tractor trailer accident in Schuylkill County, Pa. Tooter was born Sept. 10, 1965, in Montgomery, Ala., son of Lewis Tuttle and Virginia Sellars, and Lynwood and Alberta Tuttle. Tooter spent most of his childhood in Texas until he moved to Washburn at age 15. He attended school in Washburn and Presque Isle, and was a graduate of Presque Isle High School, Class of 1984. Tooter served three years in the U.S. Army and upon his return to the area worked at McCain foods, attended Northern Maine Community College's CDL course and began his 17-year career as a long haul trucking operator. For the past seven years and at the time of his death, Tooter was employed by R.F. Chamberlain, Inc. out of St. Agatha. He looked forward to his weekends at home as he enjoyed spending his time of with his wife and best friend of 23 years, Kelly. Tooter will be remembered by family and friends for his carefree personality, his love of laughter and sense of humor. He always wore a smile and was always willing to lend a hand. Four years ago, Tooter and his wife began attending Presque Isle Wesleyan Church where he found the love and support of many new and lifelong friends. He enjoyed the time that he spent with his church family delivering Thanksgiving meals to those in need and enjoyed weekly phone calls with fellow church members every Wednesday evening while on the road. In addition to his wife, Kelly L. (Crawford) Tuttle, Tooter is survived by his children, Travis John, age 28, Christopher Michael, age 23, and Katherine Margaret, age 21, all of Presque Isle. Tooter is also survived by one grandson, T.J., age 1, also of Presque Isle. His children and grandson brought him great pride and joy and he loved them with all of his heart. Tooter is also survived by his father, Lewis Tuttle of Waurika, Okla.; his brother, Patrick and his fiancee, Kellie, and their three daughters of Lauton, Okla.; and his sister, Norma Jean and his special brother-in-law, Don Porterfield, of Waurika, Okla. He is also survived by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kathy and Mike Crawford of Presque Isle; a sister-in-law, Kerry and her husband, Steve Spooner; as well as two very special nieces, Kelsie and Kerstee Spooner, all of Presque Isle. He also leaves behind many other aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces. Tooter was predeceased by his biological mother, Virginia; and his parents, Lynwood and Alberta Tuttle. He will be greatly missed by his friend, Ricky Johnston, who traveled many a mile with him throughout the years. MEDWAY - Sandra Fiske went home to be with her Lord April 20, 2011, while surrounded by her husband, daughter and son. Sandra was born Aug. 21, 1949, in Millinocket, to Douglas E. Segee and Dorothy "Jean" Stratton of East Millinocket. Jesus Christ was her rock, her refuge, and the light of her life. She had the peace about life that surpasses all understanding, even in the midst of life's difficult storms. She found strength in the Word of God, particularly in this favorite verse: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6. Her love, compassion, tenderness and joy for life will be missed deeply. She was - and is - her husband Doug's high school sweetheart, even through 42 years of marriage. Steve was a graduate of Caribou High School. He worked for more than 20 years as a landscaper for Wheeler Landscaping, Manchester, and later for D.R. Struck, Winthrop. Most recently he worked for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as an electrician. Steve enjoyed watching his Boston sports teams. His greatest joy was watching his son play basketball and football for the Winthrop Ramblers, of which he was a great team supporter. Steve also spent a lot of time with his companion, Jacoby, his golden retriever. He was predeceased by his daughter, Serena Whaley, in 2005; his parents; and a brother, Stuart Whaley. A loving mother and grandmother, she raised her family of four children while residing in Braintree and Peabody, both in Massachusetts; Littleton, Colo., and Franklin, Mass. She fully supported her husband, who worked at Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation. While she lived in Colorado she had many opportunities to travel extensively throughout the country, meet a diverse group of people and coordinate social activities for his office. She attended schools and high school in Coventry, Conn. She worked at Reny's in Wells until illness forced her to retire., Valerie was very talented in arts and crafts. Family and friends share beautiful things she created. Valerie was lovely to see. She had a beautiful smile and a warm personality. She made friends easily and was loved by all. Even in the greatest of adversity, she kept her smile was brave, courageous and an inspiration to all., Her hobbies included collecting old movies, films and documentaries of Japan and China, watching classic cartoons and enjoying her flower gardens. William F. "Bill" Jordan

HOLDEN - William "Bill" F. Jordan, 38, died unexpectedly April 19, 2011, as the result of a logging accident. He was born July 7, 1972, in Oceanside, N.Y., the son of Frank and Sharon (Jordan) Karl. "B" was an avid NASCAR fan, raced at Speedway 95 and enjoyed racing around the state with his nephews. He also enjoyed fishing. Bill is survived by his parents of Holden; two daughters, Macy Karl of Brewer and Krysten Quinn of East Millinocket; one sister and her husband, Tammy and Scott Pearson of Glenburn; two nephews, Derek Pearson and his wife, Erica, of Glenburn and Jordan Pearson and his wife, Ashley, of Bangor; niece, Katie Pearson of Glenburn; two special great-nephews, Nathan and Brayden; four best friends, Bob Moleon, Troy Bickford, Mike Roy and Nino Chiapponne; many more good friends; and especially his constant companions, Skittles and Pie. Funeral services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Julio DeSanctis officiating. Friends may call 3 p.m. until the time of service Saturday. WATERVILLE -- William "Slug" Walter Harding III, 65, of 97 Cool St., Waterville, passed away Thursday morning, April 14, 2011, at 9:35 a.m. in the Intensive Care Unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor., He was born in Waterville on Dec. 24, 1945, the son of William Walter and Dorothy Ellen (Mower) Harding Jr., William leaves behind a large family of children and grandchildren who will miss him dearly. William had three children from his 30-year marriage to Donna Harding, his late wife: Bill Harding and wife Gina, Suzette Stuart and husband Shaun, and Crystal Harding and fiancŽ Chris. William had six grandchildren, Destiny, 8; Ethan, 7; Crysten, 5; Nathan, 4; Chris Jr., 2; and the newest addition, baby Jacob, 1 month., He also had three children from a previous marriage, William W. Harding IV, Jill Harding and Chris Harding. He is also survived by his brother, Trevison Harding and wife Geraldine, of Fairfield., Slug was a very independent man who wanted to do things his own way, in his own time. He didn't let his conditions and limited resources hold him back from activities he enjoyed sharing with his family. Slug managed to get out of the house and take part in various activities such as family activities and school functions. He also enjoyed watching baseball and football, especially the New England Patriots., He was a soft-hearted, humble man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him., It is a real loss to start the day off without seeing that glowing smile that radiated in our hearts, reminding us that we could always make a difference every day. BANGOR - Zelma M. "Nanny" Beaton, 87, died April 19, 2011, at a local health care facility. She was born July 8, 1923, in Bangor, daughter of Claude and Vesta (Carrie) King. Zelma is survived by three daughters, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family thanks the staff at Ross Manor for the excellent care they provided during her stay.
