Adelia D. "Deedee" Lyford

ORNEVILLE - Adelia D. Lyford, 67, died June 12, 2011, at her home. She was born April 12, 1944, in Bradford, the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Noke) Jack. On June 25, 1960, Adelia married the love her life John K. Lyford Sr. and together they shared 51 years of marriage and raised four loving children. DeeDee's most favorite things to do in the world were to create flower arrangements and play cribbage. In addition to her beloved husband, John Lyford Sr., Adelia is survived by her four children, John Lyford Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of LaGrange, Kathy Foss and husband, Jimmy, of Orneville, Penny Madore of Orneville and Wendy Coburn and husband, Rob, of Milo; 10 grandchildren, Erica Lyford, Trevor Lyford, Bobby Robinson, Kyle Foss, Paul Madore, Lacey Madore, Jacey Lyford, Robert Coburn, Linda Coburn and Jon Coburn; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Lyford and Melony Pelton; and her mother-in-law, Elnora Lyford. She was predeceased by her parents; and a grandson, Todd Roesing. Funeral services will be private. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Milo. Bertram E. Thorne

PEABODY, Mass. - Bertram E. Thorne, 87, formerly of Hartland, died June 11, 2011, in Peabody, Mass. He was born July 21, 1923, on the family farm in St. Albans, son of the late Ellis M. and Emma (Young) Thorne. Bertram attended the one-room Merrill school in St. Albans, and was valedictorian of Hartland Academy, Class of 1941. He interrupted his studies at the University of Maine to enlist in the, and served as a sergeant in the 3rd Army, 79th Infantry Division during the last four months of the war in the European Theater. He graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration in 1948. He was a salesman for Agrico Fertilizer Co., serving farms in New England for 35 years, and became the northeast regional manager. After retiring he spent winters skiing at Sugarloaf, summers at camp on Great Moose Lake, Hartland, took several trips to Europe and when at home in Hingham, Mass., he drove for Meals on Wheels. He greatly enjoyed driving, listening to music, eating out, hosting get-togethers, visiting friends and relatives, and Red Sox wins. He moved to Brooksby Village in 2001, giving up skiing and Meals on Wheels, but continuing his other activities. His last years were spent at Rose Court, Renaissance Gardens, where he participated to the best of his abilities in their social activities. He appreciated the kindness, care and consideration he received from the staff. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and past member of the Mayflower Society. Bertram is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Helen Thorne; nephews, Roderick Thorne, Thomas Sawyer, Everett Simpson and James Thorne; nieces, Catherine Barth, Marjorie Gillespie, Susan Thorne, Col. Rosemary Thorne and Dr. Marie Zajdowicz; four great-nephews, two great-nieces, one great-great-nephew and two great-great-nieces. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Thelma Simpson, Marion Furbush, Eleanor Sawyer and Cherrie Kaifer; brothers, Raymond Thorne and Allen Thorne; and a niece, Sylvia (Furbush) Curry. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Village Cemetery, Cemetery Road, St. Albans, with the Rev. Jim Boughman officiating. Beverly P. Hewett*

MONMOUTH -- Beverly P. Hewett, 72, passed away in her home in Monmouth on June 6, 2011., Beverly was the daughter of Clifford and Irene Smalley of Bowdoinham, born on Feb. 18, 1939. She married her soulmate Robert A. Hewett, and they had just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on June 5, 2011., They had driven a tractor-trailer over the road for six years together, and enjoyed riding their motorcycle and snowmobiles in their spare time. Beverly was a devoted wife and mother, and will live on through her children, Levi, Terry Lee, Russell, James and Beth. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She loved to plant beautiful flowers in her garden, and spend hours reading her favorite books. Beverly had been a cashier at the Augusta Kmart for years, and more recently she was a cook at the grade schools in Winthrop and Monmouth., She was an active member of the South Monmouth Baptist Church, where her memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 16 at 6 p.m., In lieu of flowers, Bev would like donations made to the church, which is located at 163 South Monmouth Road, Monmouth, ME 04259.

HOULTON - Brenda J. Hanning, 61, died June 11, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Oct. 5, 1949, in Houlton, the daughter of Kenneth Hanning and Donna I. (Michaud, Hanning) MacDonald. Brenda was a member of Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, American Legion Auxiliary and was employed for several years with Houlton Ambulance Department as an emergency medical technician. She is survived by her son, George McNinch and his wife, Tammy; daughter, Tina Graham and her husband, Bret, all of Houlton; six brothers, Ken and his wife, Millie, George, Gordon, Gerry, Rodney and Fred, all of Houlton; six sisters, Gloria Prentiss and her husband, Robert, of Florida, Sharon Hanning, Sheila Bither, Dorothy Hanning, Leslie Hanning, all of Houlton, and Mary Hanning and of Rhode Island; grandchildren, Samantha Lynn McNich-Boyce of California, Katie Rae and Jacob Lee Suitter, both of Houlton; many nieces and nephews. Catherine Marnane (O'Leary) Taplin , 59, NORTH YARMOUTH -- Catherine Marnane (O'Leary) Taplin passed away peacefully on June 10, 2011 at Maine Medical Center. She resided in North Yarmouth for 30 years. She was born in Portland on March 18, 1952 daughter of Jerome and Elizabeth (Berry) O'Leary., She graduated from Deering High School Class of 1970 and Westbrook College in 1972 with a business degree. She worked for Dr. Zolov as an Office Manager from 1973 to 1995. She retired to stay home with her daughter Kristen Taplin in 1995., 'Cathi' / 'Marti' was a loving, caring, giving person who always put others ahead of herself. She had a great love for her daughter Krissey. She enjoyed watching Krissey's pitching career in softball, and Cathi loved riding horses, Great Danes, beano, and trips to Foxwoods. She volunteered with special needs handicap horseback riding. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Portland., She was predeceased by her parents. PORTLAND -- Charles M. "Buddy" Gordon, 48, was united once again with his beloved wife, Shayne, as he passed away following a brief illness at Maine Medical Center in Portland. His loving family was by his side., He was born in Waterville on June 12, 1962, the son of the late William Perry and Eunice May (Campbell) Gordon Sr., Following his schooling at Lawrence High School, Buddy served briefly with the Army., He married his soul mate, Shayne Tibbetts, and the couple shared many happy years together until her passing on March 22, 2006., Buddy was employed with different tree service companies in his earlier years and had been employed by Louis Mack Scrap Metals in Portland for nearly 20 years., Buddy was a very caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially being by the water. Spending time with his family and friends meant the world to him. Carter, 82, of Ledgewood Drive, Falmouth, formerly of Westbrook, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2011, with her four children at her side., She was born in Burlington, Vt., the daughter of Glen and Sarah Baker Prest. She graduated from Deering High School and attended Westbrook College., On August 16, 1948, she married the love of her life, Norman W. Carter. During their 53 years together they especially looked forward to spending their summers at their cottage on Pettingill Pond with their family., Charmaine had a passion for antiques and rented a booth at a local antiques shop for many years. She also loved going to yard sales, playing bridge, bingo and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She loved nature and enjoyed feeding the many birds that visited her backyard., Her love of gardening showed in her many beautiful gardens. She especially enjoyed writing letters to all her family and friends., She was corresponding secretary for the Woman's Republican Club in her early years, later volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House., Her family always came first., She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, in 2002, her brothers, Donald and Glen Prest and sisters, Jean Cook and Virginia Fahie of Nova Scotia. Surviving is her sister, Mary Margaret Prest of Alberta Canada. BANGOR - Clayton G. White, 85, husband of Alta (Robertson) White, passed away June 11, 2011, surrounded by his family at a Bangor health care facility. He was born June 25, 1925, in Bancroft, the son of George and Beulah (Tedford) White. Clayton loved hunting and fishing, and he liked a good joke. He was a, veteran of the Marine Corps. He drove school bus for Cyr for 10 years, and was into harness racing for 25 years. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Alta, he is survived by three children, Diane Butko and her husband, Al, of Burnville, Pa., David and his wife, Belinda, of Durham, N.H., and Dennis and his wife, Vicki, of Hookset, N.H.; three sisters, Ethlyn Huntley of Bangor, Yvonne Rollins of Wytopitlock and Lorraine Vinci of Wingdale, N.Y.; five brothers, Alston Wood of Portland, Leslie, Arthur and Leland Wood, all of Florida, and Paul Wood of New York; five grandchildren, Gary "Kip" Faulkner of Bangor, Greg White of Greenfield, Mathew White of Portsmouth, N.H., Lindsay White of Dover, N.H., and Nick White of Ellenboro, N.C.; three stepgrandchildren, Jason Butko of North Carolina, Steve Flynn of Manchester, N.H., and Danny Flynn of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Yasmin White of North Carolina and Rose White of New Hampshire. Mr. Lane was employed at GH Bass Shoe Co., Franklin Show, and since 1987 had been employed at Bath Iron Works., He was a lover of the outdoors who enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, jeeping, camping, ATV-ing and landscaping. He also enjoyed music and dancing., He was a previous member of Bartlett United Methodist Church of North Jay and was a member of the North Jay, Excelsior, and Pomona Grange as well as the Flagstaff ATV Club and Shorey Chapel in Industry., He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Charlotte, of Industry; two sons, Jason and his wife, Kathyrn of Farmington and Justin of Industry; his mother, Mavis, of North Jay; brother, David, and his wife, Penny, of Gettysburg, Pa.; sister, Tammy Lane of, Farmington. AUGUSTA -- Earl B. Smith, 83, a resident of Winthrop, died early Saturday morning, June 11, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born April 14, 1928, the oldest of eight children born to Gordon and Annie (Chick) Smith., He attended school in East Monmouth in a one-room schoolhouse grades kindergarten-eighth and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1946. Earl served in the U.S. Army from 1946 through 1949 in Japan and after graduating from Coyne Electrical School in Boston was called to serve during the Korean conflict., Upon discharge, he worked as an electrical foreman for Bendix Corporation in New Jersey. In 1955 he started a wholesale radio and electronics business in Eatontown, N.J., and owned and operated it successfully for 32 years., On June 14, 1980, in Winthrop, he married Mary Prince Cox of Monmouth. After selling his business, he moved back to Maine and began an outboard motor repair business in 1988. Earl retired again in 1999 when motors became "too damn heavy to wrestle." Upon his retirement he sold his business to his good friend, David Neill, and continued to work with him following his retirement., He continued to restore antique boats and maintain his large collection of old outboards. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and in 1972 organized a hunt in Botswana, Africa, with amateur radio friends and shot an elephant, cape buffalo and kudu, plus other lesser trophies. He was a 50-year extra class radio amateur (call sign was K2YLM), a life member of Associated Radio Relay League, Post 40 American Legion, Quarter Century Wireless Association in Marconi Chapter 138 in New Jersey., He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mary Smith of Winthrop; two daughters, Sandra Curley of Elkton, Md; Vicky Kilgore of North Carolina; his sons, Dr. Steve Smith of Shelby, NC., and Raymond Smith of Neptune, NJ.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; stepchildren Valorie Martin of Brunswick, Dot Glidden of Readfield, Brian Cox of Winthrop and Becky Hackett of Massachusetts; eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren., He was predeceased by his son, James Smith, daughter, Donna Hendrick, brothers, Chelsea, Elmore and Harry and sisters, Ruth, Cora, Lynne and Carol., Messages of condolence may be sent to www.finleyfuneralhome.com., Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Eursel Connors Campbell*

Eursel Connors Campbell, 92, SOUTH PARIS -- Eursel Connors Campbell, 92, formerly of Freeport and New Gloucester, passed away on June 4, at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris, with his daughter by his side., He was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Houlton, Maine, the third son of George Ernest and Annie (Brown) Campbell. At the age of 16, he graduated from Mapleton High School in Mapleton, Maine where he played alto sax in both the school and community band and excelled in baseball. After graduation, he made his way to Boston with the intention of trying out as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. In January 1938, he married Doris Mae Dow, also of Mapleton. Before joining the U.S., in 1944, he and Doris moved to Freeport where they raised their family. After returning to Freeport from the European Theater in 1946, he was employed at the Eastland Shoe Company before beginning his own business of installing and refinishing wood floors which he enjoyed until his retirement in 1980., Eursel enjoyed spending time with his family at his camp on Kingsbury Pond and at the Dow family camp on Machias Lake. When he wasn't fishing the lakes for salmon, he was fishing the brooks for trout for neither black flies nor sub-zero temperatures could keep him from his favorite pastime. When not fishing, he was appointed 'camp cook,' as he, Eursel Connors Campbell, Lindquist Funeral Home, Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 846-4011, was renowned for his baked beans, mile-high biscuits, and fried fish. His wit and humor was legendary as he enjoyed a good joke, whether he was good- naturedly poking fun of friends, family (particularly gullible grandchildren), or himself., Eursel is survived and will be greatly missed by daughter Anita Campbell and her husband Alfred Proctor of New Gloucester, daughter-in-law Martha Campbell of Bradford; grandchildren Kelly Brooks of Winthrop, Kristy Vickerson and her husband Jim of Monmouth, Kimberly Hallowell and her husband Bernard of Monmouth, Heather Campbell of New Gloucester, and Jamie Campbell of San Francisco; great grandchildren Ryan and Tade Brooks, Robert Vickerson, Erica and Emily Randall, Rayna Campbell and Samara Horwitch., He was pre-deceased by his parents; his wife; his brothers Robert, Vinton and Zane Campbell; his son Roger Campbell and his daughter Dawna (Campbell) Savory., Eursel is buried in Burr Cemetery, 56 Durham Road, Freeport. Lorraine Doris Long Scheuchzer, 77, FREEPORT -- Lorraine Doris Long Scheuchzer, 77, formerly of Portland, died in Freeport Monday, May 24, 2011 after an illness. Born Jan. 19, 1934, the daughter of Leona (Toni) Sorrell and stepdaughter to Urban Heath. She was raised first in Ashland, N.H. until her family moved to Conway, N.H. where Lorraine attended Conway schools . She was the oldest of four girls. She loved country music and was a self-taught guitar player. She enjoyed singing in the church youth choir., After she attended high school, Lorraine went to live with Persis Berry and worked helping her in the library. She then worked as a chamber-maid at Russells Cottages in North Conway and then at Forrest Glenn Inn. Lorraine moved to Portland in 1959 to pursue her music interest. There she met and married Gene Scheuchzer, who played the accordion under the stage name 'Gene Bennett'. Lorraine took a stage name of 'Laney Scott' and played in a band with Richard Secord and Kathleen Gardner called the Country Troubadours. They played at Scarborough Downs and other places and Lorraine and Kathy would sing and yodel, 'Cowboy Sweetheart', among other favorites. Lorraine was also a song writer., She and her husband had two children, a son, Gene ('Ted') and a daughter, Debbie, which they raised in Portland. Lorraine would often attend country music jam sessions at Our Place, or Reiche School in Portland, or have friends over for a jam at her house. She enjoyed entertaining, loved her family and brought joy to her grandson, her nieces and nephews and countless friends. She was well known for her peanut-butter fudge. After she divorced, she went to work at the Westfield Inn. She later went to live at Larrabee Village in Westbrook and made many friends there until moving to Hawthorne House in Freeport where she liked to teach the staff how to yodel., We would like to thank the staff of Webster Commons and Hawthorn House, in Freeport and Chans Hospice for their loving care of our mother., Lorraine is survived by her sisters, Helen Heath of Conway, N.H., June Goyette and her husband Michael, of Hollis, Diana Sorrell and her husband, Wes, of Portales, N.M.; a son, Eugene Scheuchzer, Jr., of Portland and a daughter, Debra Ryan and her husband, David; and grandson, Jacob, of Buxton., Visiting hours will be at 10:00 A.M. followed by a memorial service for friends and family on Friday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Bar Mills Community Church, 13 Hermit Thrush Dr, off Portland Road, Buxton. He was also known as the "scrap iron man." CRAWFORD - Norma J. (Roberts) Day, 79, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. Norma was born June 13, 1931, in Wesley, daughter of the late Maurice and Georgiana (Hawkins) Roberts. She attended Wesley Grammar School and Machias High School. Norma was a member of Wesley Grange 546, Wesley Historical Society and Order of Pythian Sisters. Norma worked for many years at Downeast 5 and 10; New England Telephone and Telegraph, as an operator; Crawford Wreath Shop; and fed all the bear hunters at Carlo Cabins. She married Leland Day in August 1958, in Wesley, and for many years they owned and operated L.C. Day Trucking and Cloud 9 Restaurant and Motel. Norma had many interests, including her cats, gardening, dancing at Wesley Grange, traveling with her family and family get-togethers. She was known for her pickled beets, biscuits, pound cakes and mincemeat pies. Norma always had an open door for friends and family for coffee and dessert, she was a true friend. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leland Day; an infant daughter, Deborah Ann; a brother, Samuel Roberts; and a sister, Roberta York. Surviving are her one son, Anthony Day and his fiancee, Kim Perkins, of Alexander; three daughters, Debra Ayers and her husband, Wayne, of Crawford, Wendy Day-Pemberton of Jonesboro and Melissa Gatchall and her husband, Graham, of Glenburn; her grandchildren, Matthew and Amy Day, Teressa Smith, Britany, Courtney and Jordan Ayers, Andrew and Hannah Gatchall and Georgie-Anna Pemberton; two great-grandchildren, James and Wyatt Campbell; two sisters, Joan Moran and Tela Sinford; three sisters-in-law, Mabel Roberts, Marilyn Beaupre and Marice Chaffee and her husband, Bud; and a brother-in-law, Truman Day and his wife, Eva. WASHBURN - Phyllis Marie (Parker) Harris went peacefully to be with the Lord and her beloved husband June 12, 2011, with her loved ones by her side at her home. She was born Phyllis Marie Parker Feb. 3, 1923, in Caribou. She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Harris of Washburn; a daughter at birth, Wendy of Masardis; her parents, Harold and Margaret (West) Parker of Masardis; a brother, Harold T. Parker of Oakfield; and a sister, Doris (Parker) Keneher of Merced, Calif. She is survived by her loving daughter, Terri (Harris) Lockhart and husband, John, of Mapleton; and sisters, Velma (Parker) Craig of Bangor and Elsie (Parker) Gibson of Ashland. She has many very special nieces and nephews who she loved very much. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Julie (Lockhart) Akely and husband, Steve, of Naples; three special great-granddaughters, Lilly Kenney, Emeline Akely and Kate Akely; a great-goddaughter, Anna Lee Adams of New Gloucester, that will all miss her very much; a very special daughter-like friend, Wilma Long and husband, Ted, of Crouseville; and a very special son-like friend, Steve Cullins and wife, Kathy, of Hanibal, N.Y. Phyllis had so many people she cared about, loved and always prayed for. Phyllis had many sweet people who helped her in the later years and who she was very happy with. Phyllis was a member of Advent Christian Church, Ashland, until she could no longer go, but she always kept prayer and always prayed for those she knew and loved. She worked for McCain's at the old Washburn plant until she retired in the late 1970s. Phyllis and her husband, Melvin, were together always and had many good years together here in Maine at their home and camp at Squa Pan Lake and fishing. They had a great time going to Florida for many winters and she had missed him so much since he passed. Their love for each other was undeniable. Phyllis liked to watch the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees play baseball. Phyllis will be remembered and loved by many. She said she had a wonderful life, a wonderful husband, and was very happy and cherished it all. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Crouseville Cemetery, on top of the hill, with Pastor George McLaughlin officiating. MADAWASKA - Therese D. Albert, 81, entered her Fifth Day with the Lord June 11, 2011, with her loving husband, Joel, and family by her side. Born Oct. 26, 1929, in Madawaska, she was the daughter of Xavier and Annie Dufour, one of 12 children. Therese was a fourth grade teacher in the Madawaska school system for more than 25 years. As a faithful, lifelong member of St. David Parish, she generously volunteered her time as religious education coordinator for 30 years. Throughout the years she served as a Eucharistic minister, French and English lector, RCIA team member, Ladies of St. Anne, and assisted with funeral luncheons. As a volunteer she also organized and developed a diabetes support group affiliated with Northern Maine Medical Center. Therese is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Joel; her children and their spouses, Evelyn and Dave Rogerson of Essex Junction, Vt., Susan and Steven Small of Gorham, John and Marlene Albert of Madawaska, James and Belinda Albert of Summerfield, Fla., and Cynthia and Joel Nickless of Scarborough; her grandchildren, Nicole and her husband, Jeremy, of South Berwick, Mathew Rogerson of Essex Junction, Vt., Jeffrey Seekins of Atlanta, Kari Seekins of Los Angeles, Meeka Albert of Portland, Jordan Albert of Madawaska, Shannon Albert of Guymon, Okla., Jessica Albert of St. Agatha and Andrew and Danielle Nickless of Scarborough; her great-grandchildren, Olivia and Noah of South Berwick; and her sisters, Simone Gagnon, Cecile Pozzuto, Rita Collins and Bernadette Hein. Special thanks to the staff of Northern Maine Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave to her. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at St. David Church. Valerie A. (Lanphere) Preble

CORINTH - Valerie Ann Preble, 59, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011, at her residence, after a short battle with cancer. She was born April 3, 1952, in Kurtsville, Mo., the daughter the late Jack and Loretta (Florindi) Lanphere. She is now with her best friend and healer, great God Jehovah, Jesus Christ. Valerie is survived by two sons, Bradley and wife, Amy, and their children, Autumn and Luke, of Corinth and Bryan and wife, Kathy, and their children, Ethan, Cordell, Brandon and Jessica, of Plymouth; a brother, Bradley Lanphere of Rockport; a sister, Jeannie Butler of Newport; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Charleston Pentecostal Church, where funeral services will be held 6 p.m. with Pastor Matthew Ward and Pastor David Bean officiating.
