Althea Fogg Johnson*

Althea Fogg Johnson, SCOTTSBORO, Ala. -- There will be a full graveside service on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the South Buxton Cemetery, Buxton, for Althea Fogg Johnson who passed away on April 4, 2011, in Scottsboro, Ala. In the event of rain, the service will be held at the North Saco Congregational Church, at the corner of Heath, Flag Pond and Rocky Hill Roads., She was born in Saco on Feb. 5, 1919, the daughter of Sumner and Mildred Fogg who owned a dairy farm located on the Simpson Road. She was the valedictorian of the Thornton Academy (Saco) Class of 1936. She was an accomplished pianist and organist having been taught by Ruth Olive Roberts., After graduation, she was employed at the offices of Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in Saco. She continued to enjoy giving piano lessons to many in the area during these years., She married Walter G. Johnson in 1943 while he was serving his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. Upon his return they moved to Massachusetts as he began his career in the air conditioning and refrigeration corporate world. Althea supported Walter in his career with moves to Virginia, Alabama, Michigan, New Jersey, and New York with final retirement in Montgomery, Ala., where they lived for many years before locating to Scottsboro, Ala., for the last few years. Althea was a devoted wife and mother lovingly raising four children. Everywhere she resided she would play for her friends, her church and donated her time to others playing at gatherings and local nursing homes. Regardless of how far away she lived, each summer she would pack up the children and spend a summer holiday at the Fogg farm., Althea was known throughout her life for the cards and letters she would write to their many friends and relatives, always keeping them updated on the Johnson family welfare. She never seemed to miss a holiday or a special occasion and would always include a note packed with as much information as space would allow. She was a firm believer in 'Everyone enjoys getting a card!', Althea was predeceased by her brothers, Harold Fogg of Portland, and Arthur Fogg and Roy Fogg of Saco; and her daughter, Wini Johnson Manzo and her husband Walter. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Johnson Reid of White Lake, Mich., and her sons, Michael Reid of Madison, Ala., and Kevin Reid and his children, Tyler, Madison and Luke of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; Wini's husband John Manzo of Scottsboro, Ala., and their two daughters, Laura Manzo Backes and her husband Chris, and their two children, Nicholas and Lilliana of Peachtree City, Ga., and Sara Manzo Baranauskas and her husband Matthew of Portland, Ore.; a son, Norman and his wife Teresa of Scottsboro, Ala., and their children, Jeremy of Orlando, Fla., and Ambra of Madison, Ala.; and a son, David and his wife Deborah, and their children, Lindsay, Brent and Jenna of Peachtree City, Ga., In 1810, Rufus Fogg purchased the original property and built the home place on the Simpson Road. His son James Frank continued the farming operation followed by Sumner whose sons Roy and Arthur continued a dairy operation into the 1960s. Althea's passing marks the last of the fourth generation who have lived on the Fogg farm., Althea was a member of the Scottsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church whose pastor Rev. Dr. Roy W. Hall will be conducting the service. Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patterson, 76, of Lovejoy Shores Drive, died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at her home., She was born in Gardiner on June 28, 1934, and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1953. Bertha had worked at Woolworths in Gardiner and later at an all girls school in Hallowell. She enjoyed watching soap opera's and doing word search games. She also enjoyed her cats and dogs. Carolyn Usher Goff*

Carolyn Usher Goff, KENNEBUNK -- Carolyn Goff Usher passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough., Carolyn was born in Portland on Feb. 18, 1929, the daughter of Lamont Usher and Alta Scammon. Carolyn graduated from Hollis High school. She met Harlan Goff at the high school and they were married on June 21, 1952, at the Baptist Church in Hollis Center., Carolyn taught school after their marriage. Her last assignment was in Limington., Carolyn's sister Shirley married David Towle and they moved to Acton, Mass. The sisters were very close. They enjoyed the Towle cottage at Hills Beach in Biddeford and a small camp, built by Harlan at Sebago Lake., Harlan enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1957. They moved to Fletcher Street in Kennebunk. Carolyn had no children but enjoyed her sister, cousins and many friends including the Goff and Towle families., Carolyn will join Harland in the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Harlan passed away on Feb. 15, 2011. Carolyn and her sister Shirley grew up on a small farm in Hollis. The gravesite is located only a stones throw from that house, and in the cemetery where her father was caretaker for many years., A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 3 p.m., at the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on River Road in Hollis. The Rev. Janet Leighninger will officiate. Cristina Olsen, 59, FALMOUTH -- Cristina Olsen, 59, of 138 Mast Rd., passed away quietly at her home on May 26, 2011, after living a full life and having imparted a pure love to her many family and friends., She was born in Portland on Sept. 25, 1951, the daughter of Andrea and Anne Lombardi DeForte and was educated in Portland schools., Cristina was employed by the University of Southern Maine for over 20 years. In her earlier years she worked at Goodwill and in various business offices., She loved life and loved people. Cristina made a friend of everyone she met and everyone loved her. Her favorite activities included traveling, racquetball, cooking, decorating, dining out, drafts, dancing and shopping., Cristina was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain. In the last five years Cristina and her husband made their yearly trip to Branson, Mo., Cris and Olie enjoyed the company of friends at festivities and events held at the Italian Heritage Center for many years. She had attended the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Always a caring and courageous woman, Cristina was the matriarch of the DeForte family. A loving daughter, sister, aunt and niece Cristina was devoted to her soul mate, caregiver and best friend, husband Olie., Being a truly loyal friend, Cristina never forgot birthdays, anniversaries or important dates. She was the picture of strength and courage throughout her battle with illness and despite a tough prognosis continued her tireless work with the charities she supported and the family and friends she cared so deeply about. A truly extraordinary person, Cristina will be deeply missed by her many friends including Barbara Floridino, Pat Peters, Sonny Dobson and her 'Adopted Mom,' Angie Magno., A special thanks to Dr. L. Golden, Pauline H. Pamela S. and Diane F. She would always say or think 'I'd rather be dancing.', Her smile would always light up a room and make you smile back., She is survived by her devoted and beloved husband of 38 years, Ervin 'Olie' Olsen. Elfrieda Fontein*

Elfrieda Fontein, 89, KENNEBUNK -- Elfrieda Fontein died peacefully on May 27, 2011 in Kennebunk at the age of 89. She was predeceased in 2010 by her loving husband of 65 years, Pieter Dirk Matak Fontein., Elfrieda was born in Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey, on June 7, 1921 to Frederik M.E. van der Zee, who owned a shipping business and served as the Netherlands Consul to Egypt, and Janet Giraud. The family moved to Alexandria, Egypt when Elfrieda was an infant. She was raised in that Mediterranean city and became fluent in many languages including Greek and Latin. She also studied art, which she enjoyed and practiced throughout her entire life. Elfrieda attended middle school in Holland and secondary school at Bedgebury in Kent, England, where she graduated with the highest honors. During WWII, Elfrieda returned to Alexandria where she served as a volunteer for the British Red Cross Society, first with the Egyptian Branch and then later in London, England. For her work in caring for and comforting the Allied patients, she received three medals from the British War Department, the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star and the War Medal 1939-45. In Alexandria, Elfrieda met her future husband, Pieter, who was serving as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy. They were married in London on Feb. 8, 1945. After the war, Elfrieda and Pieter lived briefly in Holland, and in 1948 moved to New Jersey when her husband was transferred by Holland America Lines. Before moving to Kennebunk in 2007, Elfrieda lived in New Jersey for 59 years, mostly in Oradell where she had an active life raising four children. She did volunteer work for the Pascack Valley Hospital where she became President of the Auxiliary, and accompanied her husband on numerous business trips throughout the USA, Caribbean and Europe. Elfrieda routinely drove into New York City to attend museum lectures, enjoy the theater and participate in Netherlands Club functions. She also enjoyed spending summers in Maine as a resident of Biddeford Pool for 45 years. Elfrieda attended the Episcopal Church and was a regular church member in both Oradell and Biddeford Pool. She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother who tirelessly impressed upon her children the importance of education, culture and good manners. Frederick Weber Canfield*

Frederick Weber Canfield, 81, YARMOUTH -- Frederick W. 'Ted' Canfield, 81, of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. A Navy veteran and successful businessman who started and ran companies around the country and in Russia, he was devoted to and loved by his family., He was born in Boston on Feb. 1, 1930, the eldest son of Haskins Bishop Canfield and Anne Waterman Canfield, of Belmont, Mass., Ted graduated from Belmont Hill School in 1948. He went on to graduate from Williams College in 1952, and that same year he married Janet Littlefield, of Belmont, Mass. They had four children, and together raised their family in Wayland, Mass., Webster Groves, Mo. and Memphis, Tenn. They were married for 38 years., Shortly after his marriage he entered the Navy in 1953. While there, he graduated from the Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and became a lieutenant, serving 40 months as combat information officer in Korea on the USS Hazelwood. While there, his eldest twin sons were born, and he wasn't able to first see them until they were six months old. He was a proud and dedicated veteran. After his military service, he was accepted into Harvard Business School, where he earned his MBA., He worked within various business enterprises specializing in financial management, with companies based in Boston, St. Louis, Memphis and elsewhere. He was CFO or Senior Financial Executive for companies such as Dynatech, Missouri Pacific, Ralston Purina, and Delta and Pine Land, and was selected to be on the board of directors of various companies throughout his career., He was also an entrepreneur, and had a free spirit. In 1992, at the age of 62, he was selected to participate in the first Peace Corps mission to Russia to assist in the development of the Russia private business/free enterprise system. He was in Vladivostok, Russia, with the Peace Corps for seven years, and participated in other international experiences throughout Asia for several years thereafter, consulting with companies such as ACFES, the European Bank for Reconstruction Development, and Giant Supermarket. While in Russia, Ted met Zhanna. They were married in 1996 and later made Yarmouth their home., Ted was also active in roles outside of business. He was a member of the World Affairs Council of Maine, Financial Analysts Society, Financial Executives Society, Vladivostok International Business Association, Missouri Amateur ice Hockey Association, Williams, Alumni Society, Harvard Business, Frederick W. 'Ted' Canfield, Lindquist Funeral Home, Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 846-4011, School Club, and the Kiwanis Club, among others. He loved to talk about politics in entertaining ways, and was an avid and unapologetic Republican. He was an excellent writer, and had articles on various topics published in newsletters and magazines, such as the Williams Alumni Review. He also had a love for the ocean, and for many years enjoyed cruising East Penobscot Bay in his Boston Whaler. He was 'captain' of his boat, and his family., Ted touched the lives of many people with his honesty, integrity, poise, manners, intellect and wit. He knew and carried himself so well, and he was well-respected by all who knew him., But the most important thing in his life was his family, for which he cared about and loved in every way. He was a loyal and respectful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. And his children will never forget the sound and loving advice he was always willing to so gracefully offer over all the years. He often referred to the quote engraved upon the granite gates of Williams College to his children: 'Climb High Climb Far, Your Goal the Sky Your Aim the Star'., He is survived by his beloved wife, Zhanna Canfield, of Yarmouth; four children, Scott Canfield and his wife Minh of Yarmouth, Leigh Canfield and his wife Leslie of Yarmouth, Amanda Richardson and her husband Scott of Yarmouth, and Clarke Canfield and his wife Amy of South Portland; and their mother, Janet Canfield, of Memphis, Tenn. His grandchildren all loved him, and called him 'Gumpa.' He will be sorely missed by Brendan Canfield, Erik Canfield, Anushka Canfield, Eli Canfield, Sam Richardson, Julia Richardson, Ean Canfield, and Jesse Canfield. Gladys K. Allen, AUBURN -- Gladys K. Allen, of 42 Fern St., Auburn, formerly of Jay, died at her home on Friday, May 27, 2011. She was born in Wilton on Aug. 12, 1931, the daughter of Frank Knox and Gwendoline Burnham Knox Kneeland. She attended Jay schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1950 in the top ten of her class. She had participated in band, orchestra and chorus., In 1950 she married Lawrence W. Flash Allen in Wilton. At age 16 she was baptized at the North Jay Methodist Church which she had attended as a child. In 1957 she was baptized at the Jay Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years, taught Sunday School, was a youth group leader and a secretary for the Jay Baptist Church Couples Club. She was also assistant organist and pianist., She later attended the Eaton Memorial United Church in Livermore Falls where she sang in the choir for many years. She was born with a song in her heart as was her mother and her grandfather Edgar Burnham, who were both singers. She had sung at many weddings and in the Androscoggin Valley Choral Society., Gladys was a trustee and secretary for the Jay Village Water District for 23 years. She was a ballot clerk for the Town of Jay for many years. She worked at the Lakeshore Restaurant in Livermore as a hostess and singer. She had been president of the Jay P.T.A. and chairman of the North Jay Extension Service. She was a 63 year member and past master of North Jay Grange #10, also Excelsior Pomona Grange #5 State and National Granges., She had bowled in a league and one year bowled the highest game in her league. She had played a lot of bridge for many years and was a formidable foe., She had cared for several family members when they were old and sick for nearly 30 years., She loved to attend all of her children and grandchildren's, Gladys K. Allen, sporting events, musicals and theatre and T.V. appearances., She was proud to be a ninth generation Mainer and that she had some Native American heritage. She loved her family and said she was 'the luckiest person in the world to be around all these wonderful people.', She loved to travel and had been to 45 of the 50 states, also Canada and Mexico., She is survived by four sons, Larry Flash Allen and wife Tina of Scarborough, Barry M. Allen and wife Dennise Whitley of Norway, David B. Allen and wife Bonnie of Mexico, and Christopher L. Allen and wife Betty of Auburn, with whom she made her home; four grandsons, Daemian Allen and wife the Rev. Tara Olsen-Allen of Bellingham, Wash., Micah Allen and wife Christina of Lebanon, Shannon Allen and fiance Heidi Leigh of Kennebunkport, and David Allen Jr. of Mexico, a granddaughter, Sarah K. Allen of Portland, a step-granddaughter, Sarah Myles Raymond of Rumford., a step-grandson, Mark Whitley and family of So. She would eventually move to Atlanta where she met and married Thomas Brinkley. Together they have one son, Jamaal who survives Joyce along with his wife Ashley and their daughter Jamayah, all of whom reside in Atlanta., Joyce, who was loved and will be missed, is survived by her mother, Lucille Young of Portland; sisters, Jean Gullatt, of Dover, N.H., Mary Crawford, Patricia Smith, and Kathy Parker-Ross, all of Portland, a brother, Tracy Young of Portland along with her sister Joan Davis, of Marietta, Ga., who has stuck by Joyce and had taken care of her for years and during her time of distress. Leon P. Legere, 96, SANFORD -- Leon P. Legere, 96, of Sanford, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by his loved ones., Born in Sanford on March 24, 1915, he was the eldest son of Prosper and Adelia (Baron) Legere. He attended St. Ignatius School and was a communicant of St. Ignatius Parish and St. Therese of Lisieux Parish., After a full and varied working career, he retired at age 65 from Tenneford Weaving of Sanford. During his retirement years, he was an avid and successful gardener. His family and friends frequently enjoyed fresh produce from his gardens and he took joy in sharing. He also enjoyed hunting and well into retirement, he continued to fish and shared the abundance that he caught., Well into his 90's, he remained as active as his health allowed. In recent years, he enjoyed playing card games and attending Bingo with his wife and friends. He maintained a close relationship with his only surviving brother, Emile., Mr. Legere was very proud of his children and took pleasure in the fact that his daughters always got along well and loved each other. He fondly remembered a surprise party in Florida, to celebrate his 90th birthday. It was attended by each of his children and numerous relatives and friends. He was always happiest when his family would gather to celebrate., He is predeceased by his first wife Lorrette (Vaillancourt) Legere. They were married for 52 years. Also to predecease him were his brothers, Robert, Armand, Rudolph and Gerard, and his only sister, Lucienne. He is survived by his wife Clothilde 'Connie' (Costello) Legere; and his daughters, Phyllis Vaccaro and her husband William of Lyman, Mary 'Betty' Laskey and her husband Ronald of Vernon, Conn., Claire Guertin-Brackett and her husband Dwight Brackett of Portland, Theresa Charrette of Sanford, and Carmen Pierce and her husband Peter of Oakton, Va.; as well as his step children, Ronald Costello and his wife Judy, Thomas Costello and his wife Sara, and Paula Thibodeau and her husband, Larry. Additionally, he leaves his brother Emile and his wife Lorraine; as well as 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren., Visiting hours for Mr. Legere will be on Monday, May 30th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Lafrance - Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street in Sanford. Eaton, her brother and sister-in-law Roy and Eva Thomas, and her companion, Walter Dunbar., Survivors include her daughter, Priscilla Wescott, and significant other Dale Clement of Vassalboro; grandson Christopher Wescott and wife Shelley of Vassalboro; great-grandson Corbin Wescott; nephew Leroy Thomas and wife Beverley of Morrill; great-nephews Randy and Robert Thomas and their families; several cousins; and many wonderful friends., Lytle was the register of probate for Waldo County for 28 years. She raised gladiolus and sold them to florists, and loved quilting and belonged to the quilting guild in Belfast. She volunteered at the Hutchinson Center, was active in DAR, the young Republican club in her earlier years then the Republican Club where she held many offices. Lytle also belonged to the Curling Club, Tri-Town Snowmobile Club of which she enjoyed riding with Carrie Cross. Her memberships also included the Eastern Star, Rebekahs and Morrill Grange; and she held office as the treasurer of the historical society in Morrill. Mae was also a devoted grandmother of eight and great grandmother of 10. She was active in the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church and a member of Group 3AB of the church. Mae was also a member of the Westbrook Womans Club, Westbrook American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hatters Club. She was a generous woman, who was well known and well liked in the community. She volunteered in many charities, including Preble Street Resource Center, local election centers, Westbrook Together Days and many more. Mae had a passion for travel and visited destinations world-wide. She most enjoyed her time with her family, including teaching her great-grandchildren to knit. She attended her great-grandchildrens school activities and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Twyne, 87, retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, of Portland, died on Monday, May 23, 2011, at Seaside Nursing Home., She was born in Brattleboro, Vt., on Jan. 4, 1927, and moved to Maine in 1969., She served for 20 years in the Navy and retired in 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer. After her retirement from the Navy, she enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at SMTC and received as associates degree. She later enrolled in the Certified Nurse's Assistant course and received her certificate., She was employed for many years as a CNA at the Jewish Home for the aged and then later at Cedars Nursing Care Facility in Portland. Miss Twyne was a volunteer at Peabody House until her retirement in 1999. She made a practice of giving sincere compliments to people she did not know and enjoyed their response. She made them feel 'special' and was often told, 'You've made my day!', Norma was predeceased by her parents, Hazel May (Anderson) and Cecil Wilbur Twyne. Patricia Eleanor (Karnes) Ciampi, PORTLAND -- Patricia Eleanor (Karnes) Ciampi, of Portland, died on Thursday at Gosnell House in Scarborough, after a brief stay. Patricia battled amylloidosis for more than three years at home., Patricia was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick on Nov. 12, 1940, and moved to Portland to attend Mercy Hospital School of Nursing where she received her RN. This year marks the 50th anniversary of her graduation. She became a naturalized United States citizen in 1995., Patricia spent her life providing exceptional care and attention to the people around her. She worked as a nurse in Portland and around the country until she married her husband of 45 years, Dr. Louis A. Ciampi on Aug. 28, 1965. They raised six children in their Stevens Avenue home, which also served as the office for Dr. Ciampi's practice and a gathering place for dozens of family and friends each week. Patricia lovingly fed, entertained, and provided a sympathetic ear to visitors at her kitchen table., A daughter of Irish and Scottish bakers and nurses, she was 'adopted' by her Italian in-laws to the point where she was the one to call when the biscotti didn't rise. She made an art of her domestic duties, and she was often called upon to bake wedding cakes, knit hats, re-upholster furniture, and teach lessons in using knitting machines. She went back to the workplace at the University of Southern Maine Health Office. She retired in 2005, after 20 years of her second career., In her quiet way, Patricia was a strong advocate for those she loved and a friendly face for those who felt outside or alone. She was a woman of strong faith, and was a daily communicant for much of her life at St. Peter's Catholic Church. She loved babies, which came in handy considering her fourteen grandchildren., Patricia is survived by her husband, Louis A. Ciampi, MD of Portland; her children, Dr. Michael and Kara Ciampi, Marianna Ciampi, Joanna and Andrew Bulger, Carla and John Thurston, Dr. Anthony and Kirby Ciampi, and Gilda and, Patricia Eleanor (Karnes) Ciampi, Michael Bryand, all of whom live and work in the Greater Portland area. Her grandchildren, Jacob, Alex, Kerry, Anthony, Mia, Evelyn, Chiara, Patsy, Arianna, Liam, Louis, Vivian, Jonah, and Allan continued to make her smile on a daily basis. Philip Rose, 73, STARBOARD -- Philip Rose, 73, of Starboard, died on May 11, 2011, at the Waldo County Hospital following a car accident., A poet, a captain, a teacher, and beloved family member, Phil lived in a home he built himself on a bluff overlooking Machias Bay. He was a member of the Salt Coast Sages, a Machias-based poetry group, with whom he published a book of poems. Many of Phil's poems reflected his love of the ocean, boating, and the culture of Downeast Maine., Earlier in his life Phil had taught English at Falmouth High School; later, he worked as the dockmaster at the Portland Yacht Club, taught at the Sunrise Senior College at the University of Maine at Machias, and served on the Machiasport Board of Selectmen. He is survived by sisters, Linda Lund and Marcia Adams; sons, Leigh and Richard Rose; nieces, nephews and a grandson., The family will hold a memorial event on June 25 at the Roque Bluffs Community Center.

He was born in Augusta on Sept. 18, 1918, one of nine children of John Baron and Alice (Cyr) Baron., Mr. Baron was educated in Augusta schools and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II., He was owner and operator of the Charles E. Downing Insurance Agency in Augusta for 25 years., Mr. Baron was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallowell and a former communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta; a 55-year member and past president (1959) of the Augusta Kiwanis Club, past president (1980) of the Kiwanis Past Presidents Club, a former member of the Augusta Rotary Club, longtime member of the Augusta Country Club, former member of the Depositors Trust Co. board of directors and he was a former member of the Augusta City Council. He had been a volunteer at the Bread of Life Kitchen and he received the Augusta Downtown Merchants Life Membership in 1973. He also was state director (1973-1976) and past president of Independent Insurance Agents of Maine and a member of the Honorable Order of Blue Goose International. Mr. Baron thoroughly enjoyed golfing, gardening and cooking, and he was a major sports fan., He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Barbara (Downing) Baron, in 1974; his second wife, Anastasia (Pierson) Baron, on Jan. 26, 2010; two sons, Richard Charles Baron and Robert Downing Baron; a daughter, Kathleen Baron Lewis; three brothers, Albert, Raymond and William; and four sisters, Lena, Thelma, Cecilia and Jeanette., Surviving are five daughters, Barbara Ann Pouliot, and her husband, Jean, of Oakland, Bonny Susan Baron-Carvin and her husband, Kenneth, of Chelmsford, Mass., Julie Grant of Tucson, Ariz., Theresa Marie Daniels of Windsor and Elizabeth MacKenzie and her companion, Rocky Morrison, of Augusta; a stepson, Roderick E. Landwehr, and his wife, Marcia, of Gunnison, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Gretchen Robbins, and her husband, Joseph, of Machias and Winthrop, and Patricia Caret and her husband, Gary, of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Barbara Mason, of Midlothian, Va.; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews., He will be lovingly missed by his caregiver, Mary Vogel. Sister Mary Consuela (Florence Mary) White RSM*

Sister Mary Consuela White, RSM, PORTLAND -- Sister Mary Consuela (nee Florence Mary) White, 91 yrs., died peacefully at Frances Warde Convent, Portland on May 26, 2011. She grew up in Revelstoke, N.B., Canada, the daughter of James and Mary Alice Callahan White. She graduated from Bath High School, Bath, N.B. in 1937, before enrolling in Madigan Memorial School of Nursing in Houlton, Maine. In 1944, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Portland and continued her education at St. Joseph's College, Standish (formerly known as the College of Our Lady of Mercy in Portland), Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and earned both her B.S. and M.S. in Nursing from Boston College. In addition to numerous conferences, workshops and short-term healthcare courses, Sister had the opportunity to attend a seminar in nursing at the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel in 1972., Sister M. Consuela began her ministry of nursing at the Madigan Hospital, Houlton, as Director of Nursing Services and of the School of Nursing in 1946. She served in this ministry for six years before going to Mercy Hospital, Portland, where she ministered in the same capacity for 22 years. In 1974, Sister M. Consuela left Mercy Hospital to chair and develop the Department of Nursing at St. Joseph's College, Standish, which still flourishes today. After 12 successful years, Sister was asked to assume the role of Vice-President of Mission Effectiveness at Mercy Hospital, Portland. In 1991, Sister M. Consuela retired having taught for 40 years and capped more than a 1,000 nurses in her long and successful career. During her 'retirement', she visited Mercy mostly every day, cheering up all whom she met with her kind words and bright smile., Sister M. Consuela served on a variety of Boards and Committees throughout the state: Maine State Nurses Association, Southern Maine Comprehensive Health Association, Maine Regional Medical Program, Member of the Advisory Committee to University of Maine in Augusta Nursing Program, Chair of Health Task Force of Portland Model CitiesProgram, Advisory Board to Portland City Health Department, Member of the Board of Directors of Southern Regional Alcohol Council, Maine State Board of Nursing, New England Board of Nursing, Advisory Council of Religious for the Portland Diocese, St. Joseph's Manor and the Board of Trustees, Mercy Hospital. She also served on her religious community's Leadership Council., Sister M. Consuela was the recipient of many honors for her tireless efforts in healthcare., Sister Mary, Consuela White, She was elected to Sigma Theta Tau (National Honor Society of Nursing); in 1974, she received the Rose Huddleston Award; in 1986, she was honored as the Outstanding Nurse Educator of the Year; in 1988, she received a Doctor of Humane Letters from St. Joseph's College, as well as Professor Emerita; and in 2000 received the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal. In 2002, Mercy Hospital established the Sister Mary Consuela White Award, given yearly to an outstanding Mercy nurse. St. Joseph's College also presents an annual nursing award in her name., Sister M. Consuela has been a gentle, unassuming presence as well as a 'giant of a woman' in Maine healthcare. To those who were close to her, she was a faith-filled religious; a woman of warmth and integrity, vision and compassion as well as a pioneer in the nursing field that she loved so much. She passed this love of nursing on to her many students who regarded her as their mentor and inspiration. In Sister M. Consuela's own words, 'Your motive in nursing has to be to do what's best for the patient.' This she believed, this she taught, this she lived., Sister M. Consuela White was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Dorothy White Godbout and her brother, Ronald J. White., She is survived by a dear cousin, Anna Gallivan; several nieces, nephews; cousins and their families; two devoted friends, Joyce Curry and Loretta Rogers and the Sisters in her religious community., A visitation will be held from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31st at St. Joseph's Convent, 605 Stevens Avenue, Portland, with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Wednesday, June 1st, the visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. Donald McAllister officiating. Susan Van Aken Lippoth*

Susan Van Aken, Lippoth, 74, SCARBOROUGH -- Susan Van Aken Lippoth, of York, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a very brief illness with Leukemia., She was born June 6, 1937 in Portland, the daughter of the late Walter and Alice (Willard) Trefethren. She attended Cape Elizabeth schools, Walnut Hill Prep School, Wellesley College and then graduated from Wheelock College with a degree in early childhood education., She worked as an executive secretary for her husband's company C&L Sales of Danvers, Mass. and Sheldon's Gift Shop of York., At four years old she donated her long, never been cut, blonde pigtails to the US Government. Her locks were used as the 'cross-hairs' in the Norton bomb sights of bombers to assist in World War II efforts. She was very proud of this. It would be the beginning of the many charitable gifts and multiple acts of kindness that defined Susan. She was the consummate volunteer. She could not say 'No' when it came to giving of herself, be it time or money. She would form many strong and lasting friendships because of her big heart., Susan was a woman of very deep faith. As a member of the First Parish Church, she sang in their choir for 30 years. She also was a member of the Seacoast Community Chorus. Susan enjoyed music and playing her piano. Loving to learn, she continued to take piano lessons throughout her life., Susan had a beautiful way of seeing each day as a gift and a new adventure. This would find her sailing the Maine coast or touring the US, Canada and the Alps via motorcycle with her beloved Don. It was their escapades together that made them known as an exemplary model of love for all that they met along the way. Her life's treasures were her husband, family, friends and her pets., She leaves her husband Donald M. Lippoth; a son Donald M. Lippoth Jr. and his wife Cheryl of South Portland, three daughters, Kate Shevenell and her husband Joe of Cape Elizabeth, Barbara McWherter and her husband Scott of Morrisville, Vt. and Robyn Gaudiano of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister Eleanor Wolcott of Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lt. Dan Shevenell, USN, Kayla Becker, Kerry Sullivan and Fallon Lippoth; a great-grandson Landon Becker; and her extended family Gina Connolly and Dr. David Nelson. A son John P.
